to my knowledge..... there is no one thing that can be done cheap, with large gains. it is always going to be a combination of mods.

some cheapish things you may concider (each not so effective, but together will add up, in performance and $$$)

-start with a service & tune
-extractors and exhorst
-cold air intake
-bigger carby
-high flow air filter
-loose weight

well, thats all i can think of for now, im really tired. someone else will fill in the blanks.

A Rat.............. :? 454 that is lol :D

Expensive I know
Skinny front tires, and larger back ones
Have the head shaved for compression increase (then you will need to actually run premium anyway).
Nitrous Kit

Not so expensive
Premium Unleaded - okay well maybe it is expensive....
Exhaust and extractors / K&N Air filter
Pull out all the extra added hoses from the guard and find a more direct and free flowing path to cold air.
Earth cable kit- get them from AutObarn and what not all the Japs use them in there racers.
Pump your tires up to 40psi les contact patch and less friction on the road.
Take out your spare tire and back seat (could be illegal)
Only put 10L of fuel in your car at a time then your not carrying as much weight.
Remove your catalict converter (again illegal but its amazing the power boost you will get)
Run a new Coil, leads, splitfire plugs, rotor cap rotor button, 8.8 ignition leads eagle or top gun brand, make sure they do not make contact with any metal or each other in their path to the spark plugs and the distributor.

Hope this helps......... Some of theses Im deadly serious will help, its up to you work out which ones

:P

thanks

the most effective mods to get the best performance increase other than servicing and new filters would be a combo of extractors/exhaust/cam

also if its suddenly lacking power check the leads and carby are ok (if its a carby one that is).

A RAT 454 is .... A Big block chevy V8 , 454 cubic inches in capacity . The RAT part is a nickname given to most of the big block chevs. Small block chev V8's were some times called mouse motors.

Hope that sheds some light.

Cheers

You "MAY" also find its not an easy conversion for a Zuk , but if you go down that path be certain to post pics.....

could also ensure the car is regularly serviced, tyres are correctly inflated, no unnecessary weight is in the car, all unnecessary accesories like roof racks not being used etc are removed oh and most importantly realise that a 1.6 Vitara is not designed to be aa powerful vehicle and that they aren't designed for quick acceleration. That is why they build things like the Swift.

Best funnay for ages

It's a good point though. I think vitaras have more than enough power to highlight their dodgy handling.

Very very illegal (not just with the RTA/DOT but the EPA too apparently  )
but sick birds aside, have you experienced this first-hand mud-pig???
or has anyone else for that matter noticed a power boost of an "amazing" scale removing the cat? (not hanging shit mudpig, am genuinely interested)
I fitted a 2" exhaust from the cat back with hot dog muffler a few weeks back. I was going to upsize the cat to a VN 2" unit to match, but weighing it up that little engine running gasses through little 1" or watever extractors I didnt think 200mm of standard cat would make a worthy difference so i just left the stocker cat there...

Coming back onto the subject, a healthy/fresh engine makes a bit of a difference too. 3 of my mates suzuki's all have similar km's, difference being mine is freshly reconditioned... (under 5000 ago) and mine smokes all of theirs any day of the week, all the same gearing etc, and im running 33's vs. their 31's.

I've driven a few SWB vitaras and they're very hard to predict at high cornering loads.

I am aware of a few people that have had them spin without warning on wet roads.

The roll centres are VERY different front to rear. three link/A-Arm designs have inherently high roll centres. (like the rear of a vitara) but they're not usually run with IFS fronts which have a very low roll centre.

Combine this with a wide track and short wheelbase and you don't have a recipie for good handling. The front feels tight and darty and the rear feels like it will try to overtake the front (which it does.... without too much effort.)

LWB's are better, and lifted cars are much better as the rear roll centre is unaffected by lift but the front roll centre rises with lift. With a calmini kit and OME front struts they handle well, but they are soft and progressive, totally unlike a stock vitara.

nope, I'll stand by vitaras not handling well. (but apparently I hate suzukis so nobody should be surprised by that )

You see here up in the N.T we do not have emissions testing, therefore we can get around with out having "cats", I ran a removable one in my last sierra with a Standard commodore Jig. But the real power gain I noticed was with my SS for Drag racing I had straight through pipes put in instead of the high flow cats, it felt like I had previously been driving around with the hand brake half on. The other reason I had them removed for drag racing was because I was using Nitrous of a considerable amount and didn't want to wreck the good "cats" I had. So yeah Im speaking from my experience and a drop in ET times on the track as well to back it up.

I believe thats just people that think they can treat the driving style of a 4WD the same as a car though...?

I agree with you there but I think with the right suspension setup they work out quite we and handle alot better on and off the road.... Heres some Vitara handling footage for all to enjoy
