After replacing the 6 with a V8 in an 80 series I am having difficulty keeping it cool when sand driving. Its fine around town and with general 4 wheeling but hates sand.

What would be an adequate replacement for the original radiator. I have seen these ones on ebay but am unsure of if it will be any better what do I need to look for?

Measure an XA - XE 351 crossflow 3 core radiator.. I'm pretty sure it will fit and will definately keep it cool (with a shroud).

You hit the nail on the head.

The stock 80 rad with a proper viscous fan and shroud will be more than enough and having an 80 you should have room to spare to do it perfectly.

fixed fan is the go, you simply can't get 5hp of air movement with a thermo. I used a fixed fan and no shroud with a 45 series radiator in my bundy with a 350 and it never got hot.

used a vx commodore radiator - cheap as $330 from holden new with a gen 3 never had heating issues - using vx thermo fans.

older v8's need better cooling as the coolant path in not as good

Definately get rid of those thermos. An engine driven fan and a good shroud is ALWAYS better than thermos as it sucks through the WHOLE radiator.
