I am wondering, you always see 4.2 Nissan Diesels bombed out making close to or just over 300 hp. But i am yet to find a 1HZ with similar power, as an owner of a 1HZ, before i get into trying to make some decent horsepower out of my motor i want to know if there is any concrete reasons this hasnt really been done as of yet

From what i've been told they like to snap cranks so this may be a reason for it. There was a guy on here dzltec or something like that running BS boost through a 1hdt or something similler i think

Everytime I tow someone out of the bush They always tell me how powerfull there motor WAS. before it blew up.
Always keep it simple and youll always get home.

egt's it what is going to stop a 1hz making big power, would need big coolers and exhausts to keep it happy. the nissans seem to be able to get away with it a bit more

the 1HZ had fairly restrictive precombustion chambers and lightweight pistons to make it smooth and free-revving (for a big diesel), these are both negatives when it comes to big boost however it can be done if you really want. The big limit on both the 1HZ and TD42 are that they are indirect injected engines; and if you have a nissan, you have no other option. If you want BIG power from a toyota 4.2 diesel, start with a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT and go nuts, it will quickly surpass the available power from any TD42, and probably for less modification dollars.

What sort of reasonable power / torque could you see from a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT?
Don't the 1HD-T engines suffer from big end failures?

define reasonable? with an internally standard motor, with intercooling, big turbo and exhaust, around 200kW/600Nm. If you spend big money on the insides, more.

with factory lead-free bearing shells and/or wrong oil, yes. with aftermarket bearings, almost never.

We have done a 1hz garrett turbo and pump combo that has 120rwkw.
That is in a 100 series and still going strong. It has a w/a i/c on it, stock engine.
My 1hdt with twins was doing 130rwkw stock no i/c.
It all depends on the risk you want to take and how much money you want to spend.
Look at a v8 supercar engine, lots of power, lots of money, limited life expectancy. Short motors get freshend every 5000km if they havent broken before hand.

What would be the best set up for a intercooler on a turbo 1HZ?
Front mount or top mount?
It has a DTS turbo.
