Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Howdy all,

I'm currently a proud but frustrated Daihatsu owner. Due to the ongoing struggle to get parts I'm going to move on to a toyota. Pretty much leaning towards the hilux's, without a whole heap to spend I'm hoping to spend less than 10 grand. But I have found a 1999 3L Diesel that's only just out of my price range.

Just wondering if the 3L engine is much better than the older models 2.8?

Most of the ones I can afford are the 2.8 from 1995 and getting older from there.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to do a fair bit of 4wd with it go older than mid 97 the ifs are no where as good as the solid axle ones

Oh, i didn't think all of the later models were ifs. I was really only looking for a solid front any ways but i thought this 99 model had a solid front set up but maybe i was wrong. Only seen a photo so far.

So anything mid 97 till now is ifs u reckon?

i know ill get killed for this but i just recently sold my hilux with heaps of suspension work done to it and got a gq coil ute for 11k with some suspenson work done to it and it kills the lux in every way i can think of maybe look at a gq champ

Although I'm aiming for something that I can fit into my purchase budget as well as running costs... Meaning half the fuel useage, ha ha.

Mate i recently made the same venture as Big Lux (in fact on the same day) except ive got a GQ wagon 4.2 Turbo diesel and i have found no extreme fuel differences between that and my Turbo diesel hilux (2.4 ltr) and i paid half the price of what your looking at for a lux

Really? I was under the impression they guzzled a fair bit... Is that just the petrol ones then?

the 2.8 and 3 ltr hilux engines arn't that economical.

mates 60 serie 4 litre diesel with factory turbo (12ht?) gets bout 8ltr/100ks.

i do 11.5ltr/100 in my 2.8.

another mate with a gq na deisel gets about 500 ks from 80 litres, so worse than me.

i brought my rig from brisbane and drove it straight back so brisbane to penrith on 35inch claws and it used 120ltrs so what ever that works out to be didnt think that was to bad. mine being 4.2ltr deseil non turbo, 5spd. but yea i wouldnt buy a petrol one.

I pull in around 9.5L/100kms around town driving slightly fast but not really. It's got CT20 turbo on it and if you get up it she'll chew a bit more juice. If running costs is really an issue get yourself a motorbike. 4by aren't cheap to keep.
My lux is a 1996 ln106 dual cab and it's an awesome car, yeah there's a comfy cheaper GQ/60/landy out there but for all round use, passengers and carrying assorted shit the lux is awesome. Keep in mind they're a little bit overpriced atm but it works out ok if you get one at a good price you won't loose as much when you go to sell it. I bought mine 4 years ago for 16.5 and if you look on carsales they're still going for 11-13ish. Not bad after so long. Bet you couldn't get that resale with a pootrol.

I do like the hilux's... I could use the ute for work.

Also I like the brand toyota and the massive availability of parts compared to my daihatsu.

My main reason for toyota is parts... Fuel isn't a huge thing, it will probably work out to use the same as the rocky... give or take a little bit.

I'm very much leaning towards forking out a little more than I wanted to and getting something at least mid 90's model rather than older ones.
