RANGE ROVER 1984 4 door, second owner, full service history, all the books, 140000kms, 3.5L auto, dual batteries, air, steer, central locking, ARB front/rear bars, diff lock, new battery/starter motor, 7 months rego, $6600,
pretty much exactly what I am after for a nice town car / light duty tow vehicle. the price is probably a bit high, but canberra cars usually are (bad rust is rare here).. are the autos strong? what should I be checking, considering it is pretty low km's??
Thanks..

Depends which auto it has in it - it should be a 3 speed IIRC but check it out. I am not a big fan of the 3 speed
Good that it has a new battery and starter (that would be about $350 all up worth of gear) Price is probably a bit high, you could get a smart
'86 efi Rangie with a 4 speed auto for $7500 (premium price for that) which will be a fair bit more refined, just think of the early 80s rangies literally 2 doors with extra doors, interior nearly exactly the same, noisy, hot (if these things bother you).
There is a four door in the for sale section that would be nearly as good but heaps cheaper and with stacks more gear.
1983, 4 door, silver (little rough), 3.5lt and 4 speed man, front and rear bars, driving lights, VG interior with dash pod, cargo barrier with sony 6x9's. tinted windows, snorkel, bash plate and diff guard, 2x 45lt sill tanks, 40mm body lift, 2in suspention lift, 32x10.5 motorway mongrules on black 15x7's, as well as a good set of standard rims and rubber too. ECT.....
$3,800ono

yeah, I have seen that one. I want a stocker though, rego has become a relentless nightmare in the ACT over the last couple of years.

the 3 speed auto is a Torqulfite 727 and is the same box used behind the big block International Scout. So they are very strong. Their only downfall is that they suck a bit of power from the small 3.5l. But aside from the fact they are a little slower on take off. Once they get going they are okay.
The price is a little high, but if it is in sensational condition inside and out, might be worth it. I paid around $5000 for my '84 2 door...but it was in very good condition.
Me personally, I don't like the factory EFi's and would stay with carbies for reliability and ease of repair. See if he will knock a grand off his price as it would be a good buy then if it has genuinely done 140K...it's pretty easy to swap a guage or roll back an old rangie speedo

thanks.

Wendle,
Check the market value on the car, it is only around 5k so paying more would not be advised unless it is in exceptional condition, try looking at 86 as earlier mentioned, could even get a hi-line for around 7k, if you want full electrics for city life.
We picked up an 86 hi-line 2 weeks ago for $4400 replaced the rear mains, hub seals, cleaned it and got a RWC and bob's your uncle. It also had reg to for 6 months, all up less than 5k.
Cheers

I had one of these Rangies (84 4 door auto povo pack) for 2 years. Great vehicle, but like landy-Man said, the auto chews out the power from the engine, which is why I pissed mine off in the end (and made a BIG mistake and bought a 93 Discovery!!!).
I paid $10,000 in 1998 for mine, which was cheap back then and it to was in good condition until I gave it a hiding on the Queensland off-road parks and state forests, etc.. Plus it had a rear maxi-drive in it which I still own and resides on Dad's 88 Hi-line.

The RR with 3 speed 727 auto is terrible, underpowered and terrible fuel consumption about 13mpg. Do not buy it

but it is still the only gearbox l/r ever put into their vehicles that can handle lots of cubes

you are dreaming.... the TF727 is used behind some huge american V8's....I think the ZF is strong but never as strong as a TF

Unless its one of the oz conversions , Then it would be a errrr bw35
, But may have had a 66/65 upgrade but stilll errrrrr
havn,t owned one but can,t understand the go slow on the 727, Plus poor consumption.
At a guess would say they used a non matching converter , with a to low stall speed for the fairly high reving nature of the 3.5 -in comparison to what the box usually resides behind 340-360-383-440 cubes.
Although In low range that would probly be a plus.

Wouldn't really matter if he had, those engies last for hundres of thousands of Ks. We used to have a club member with on with 700, 000 on it, only done the cam, lifters, followers in it twice.
Wendle I have sent BJ a pm with some details in it about this truck, I am sure he will forward it

I looked at one which was essentially the same mate and the price was just too high
I had the cash but just felt it wasn't worth that. At least it sounds like this guy is negotiable though

does anyone here live in fairfiield or close who could look at this one for me and tell me if it is worth the drive to have a look? I would pay you for your time...
Range Rover 1986 auto, mags, running boards, good condition, YWZ-472, $5900 negotiable FAIRFIELD WEST 02-9604 6072 or 0438-057609

Now that sounds like a better buy. EFI, ZF auto and a bit more comfort, a good base for an off-roader/town car combo. It may need a bit of work, but all 18 year old Rangies are bound to have hassles.
If the EFI does bomb out, you can always go back to carbies, not an overly hard job especially on the older EFI Rangies like that.
Good luck,
Trav

Much better option - as ususal look at Ks, history, condition, log books, ZF autos last around 300,000K before a rebuild (approx) depending on what needs doing look at between $1000 - $3000.
The 3.5L efi is not a bad setup and works ok, is a bit slow but it is ususally quite reliable.

the 86 auto one in sydney has been sold as well. I really want to end up with an auto. is it a straightforawrd swap to drop an auto into a manual vehicle? they are a purely mechanical gearbox, hey? no electronics?

MICKRANGIE and TUFFRR did a 5 speed to auto conversion not long ago....Seemed to be a piece of piss as long as you get EVERYTHING you need when you buy the box

The swap from 5 speed to ZF auto is straight bolt in.
Most places sell all items required from $1000.00-1600.00.
can ve done over week end.
day one pul out manual. clean all parts.
Drink beer.
day 2 fit auto.
take for a flog, then drink beer.

Michael.
