hj60 idler gear shaft

hi all i have a leak in my transfer case it appears to be coming from the idler gear shaft took the bolt and lock tab off but not sure if i can change the oring/seal in situ like this or do i need to remove the case all bolts up to a five speed box also how much gear oil does it take to fill both gear box and transfer from empty my old oil came out the colour of tea and had lots of fine metal particles look like mettalic paint .

4.9 for the gear box and 2.2 for transfer

no idea about the rest im just learning myself,

it is possible to change that seal (it's just an 0-ring) without disassembling the box. the danger is that the thrust washer on the front of the idler shaft will drop into the transfer case as you draw the shaft out the back - undo the lock tab, spary some WD40, grab the shaft end with vice grips and gently wiggle it back until you can JUST get the o-ring off and on. it might be safer and smarter to just clean it up as well as you can, and smear a lot of silicone over the whole area. If it's not pouring out of there, just leave it be.

thanks dumdance i think i will try to seal from the outside and ifi ever need to remove the case fix it all then it doesnt leak while parked but under way say400km run the rear diff and driver side rear shock are covered in gear oil thank you again andrew
