Speedo Cable...

Just bought a troopy, 88 model.
Was wondering if it's quite normal for the speedo needle to just move around a bit or if most of them are dead on where they should be... And if mine is moving up and down when I'm maintaining speed, would that most likely be the speedo cable?

Do you play your stereo loud? is there speakers in the dash area? If so this may well be what the problems are, knock the bass down a bit

Really?
It's not been that loud and there's not alot of bass... I think only the one speaker works as well bit I will look into it.

If it's electricaly driven it could be intaferance from say a sterio wire if it's cable could pay to undo it at the speedo end and get some inox or crc down there and see if that does the trick

I think it's cable driven... But when I get a sec I'll get in behind there and take a squiz.
It could be a coincidence but it seems to move around as the car hits bumps in the road and such.

yeah this is a wierd toyota thing i've noticed.
Mums old hj60 speedo used to bounce heaps. A hj45 troopy i test drove did it even worse.
Yet my FJ62 and HJ47 don't do it at all.
They're all cable driven. It don't think it would be the cable or the output tab on the transfer case. But probably something to do with the mechanism in the dash.

Hey mate, we use to own a 89 hj75 troopy. Speedo used to bounce round a couple of mm too.

Yeah, this really is more than a few mm.
It seems to jump up and down 10km's. Like I'll be accelerating up a hill and right at the top the speedo will jump up 10k's and obviously the car will not go from 80 to 90 that quickly. I'm not 100% sure how accurate it is currently either, but I wouldn't know where to start looking for problems, I dunno how a cable could be faulty but I thought it would be an easy thing to change.

Sometimes the cable wears, and begins to whip when it turns, which can cause a wobbling needle as you described.

Sweet, will give it a shot then.
There's one on ebay for $30 so I might just take that.
