ok first up i have a 85 MK Patrol L28 engine. well yesterday i was driving through mooloolaba and i hit a small bump in the road this all happend in about 2 seconds. there was a grinding noise from the engine the kinda noise u get when u grind the gears. then it stalled and a foul smell was around for about 30 seconds. when it happened i was travling at 60k doin 1500rpm. on the side of the road tried to start no go the crank turns but it just sounds like the starter motor is turning nothing. check all basics. got air, got fuel and got sparkhad a bit of a fiddle with it. no go still no start. i have been told that the timing chain could of jumped a tooth or somthing like that. i did a compression check today and its got nothing on all 6 cyclinders. u can hold your finger over the spark plug hole and it will only move your finger a little bit. so if this has happened to some one before or you have ideas on what i may be i would appreaciate the help. thanks guys

check the flywheel and timing gear. bartso just had his flywheel seperate from the crank bolts.

Starter wouldn't turn the engine over if that happened to the flywheel...I'll go timing chain...Paul

does anyone know how far out it would have to be to have hit the alves in there. also if the chain skiped would that have explained the grinding noise

Sounds like you dropped the tensioner for the timing chain and bent all your valves.

grinding noise genealy means pull apart and see the damage time

well i took the timing chain cover off today and well the timing chain has a massive amount of movement in the chain. i was looking at the valves and they all look ok they come up and dont look bent

you may be lucky and only need a new chain and tensioner , probly new cogs aswell for the chain
i havnt worked on these motors before so abit unsure but you may be able to pull the rocker gear off so all the valves are closed , remove the plugs and then do a compresion test , this will tell you if any of your valves are bent

well everything is fine on it. no damage at all. pulled the sump off it no damage. mechanic cant fault it at all. but the crank is exactly 180 degrees out to the cam. but for that to happen i would of had to bend valves and smash pistons. he said for it to be like this the car would of never been unning or i would of majorly fucked the engine but theres no damage. so no one knows wtf is goin on

Is the L28 an interference motor or a free spinner? If it is a free spinner the valves will never hit the pistons no matter where the timing is set.

I was wondering. I wouldn't have guessed it would be an interference motor but someone must know for sure.
