Not a bad effort!!! Hope he/she had a spare set of undies to change into. Lots of fun recovering back up the hill too!!

One of my mates did a similar job the other week in the high country, although with less speed. Anyone care for pics?

Ok. It was late saturday arvo of the long weekend a few weeks back. We were all travelling ok, and the sun had started to drop behind some of the hills. We were right up the guts of the high country. We went along a spur, which started a pretty big/steep downhill (low 4 1st gear stuff) when we got a call on the radio to extract one of our mates from a bog hole about 2km back (bloody toyotas). We were pretty pissed of as it was a LONG day, and we needed a cold bourbon. When we got another radio call 5min later for everyone to come back to the stuck truck we knew there was dramas. This is what we rocked up to: (the photos dont do it justice-it was bloody steep. The car went off right near where the bloke with the Acubra is standing)


The truck got stuck in the hole on the switchback, then when he put it in 4wd and gunned it, the front grabbed rock and more or less launched the hilux off the edge. It was about a 4m drop down, landing in a stream, sitting on sharp rocks and the front passenger side propped up on an old log. None of them were wearing seatbelts, plus it was the first date for the couple. No injuries except usual sore back/neck etc. One of the guys almost lost his middle toe (literally) running over the rocks to check that they were ok - not nice. Very technical recovery too, i wont elaborate.

Later that weekend, same guy, same Hilux: (again, the photo's dont do it justice....)


The gearbox let go 3/4 of the way up a real shaily rocky hill. The car rolled back (bloody quick too!!), and he turned into the embankment so he didn't take out the cars at the bottom of the hill. Consequently the car rolled twice. Again, no seatbelt. The car actually rolled OVER him cause he got thrown out the passenger side window on the first roll, no bullshit. Scary as all fu#k. And once again, another fairly technical recovery.

After some fairly drastic panel beating (teck screws to hold doors on, removing front tailshaft,removing brake caliper off front) the truck carried on for the rest of 500km trip no dramas, we even drained half of the oil out to put into another piece of sh!t hilux that was out of oil. She's a beast.

And of course, none of the Nissans had any dramas. King of the mountain anyone???

One of my other mates upgraded his old hilux for a brand spankin new patrol cab chassis last monday. Went bush on the weekend just gone, written off. As Struth said, mud tyres would have saved him. He came down a hill, slippery as a fish, came to the switchback - and kept going, down down down down BANG. No more shiny new Patrol. Havent got pics of that sorry.

Doesn't matter if you feel 'pissed' or not, drinking and driving is an extremely dumb thing. Drinking and driving with no seatbelt, regardless of whether you're a truckie or not (wtf does that even make a difference?) is even more retarded.

he survived 2 serious crashes in a matter of day's and neither was survived due to the fact he wore a seatbelt... do they really help that much?

I know a lot of women who refuse to go offroad again even after a small event like a little skip and jump sideways.

Not being rude, but I dont need a lecture thanks. It wasn't ME with no seatbelt, and i'm pretty sure that anyone on here with even a quarter of a brain knows that not using a seatbelt/drink driving etc etc etc is incredibly stupid.

Struth, she actually took it very well. Didn't whinge about her neck/back, and even wanted to get back into the car to keep the b/f company (he wouldn't let her though). You've gotta love chicks that dig camping/4wding. And like you said, if i take my "boss" away, the slightest sniffle of wheel slip results in a punch in the arm or her nice manicured nails digging into my inner thigh.

Yep, getting rolled on by a 4x4 is much better! And if he'd been wearing his seatbelt he wouldn't have bounced around as much.

Meh, each to his own, I just hope when stupidity does finally catch him he doesn't take anyone else out with him.

Sorry Coxy, didn't mean to sound like I was aiming that at you. I just found it incredibly dumb that the bloke didn't put a seatbelt on after the first roll...

I think at that stage the seatbelts were actually getting used to hold the doors shut, along with about 50 teck screws.

I've been it a big stack in a commodore as a passenger (end-over, with two rolls after, followed by a double pike-half backwards twist), the driver had no seatbelt - got ejected through the windscreen (car endoed over him) and i copped a BIG bump on the head from the roof caving in. Thats why i wear seatbelt - thats why i'm paranoid.
