spotlight height in Qld

Got pulled over today and paid dearly for my lead foot :bad-words: i know its my fault . Now the cop was very nice and went through my patrol Informing me on all of the defects (illegal moderfications) as he went. I'm glad he did this because i want my truck to be as safe as possible. Now i agree that my lack of the following items make my patrol unsafe

mudflaps
front numberplate

and that my 35" tyres are NOT LEGAL in QLD.
But can someone please tellme why my cibie spotties are defective when they are on a cheesy bar and stick above the bonnet by about 30mm.

Was it "protruding above the bonnet line" which upset him or overall height from the ground? I think there's a 1.2m limit Oz wide.

it was the fact it protruded above the bonet line i Queried him and told him i thought the max hight for forward lights was 1200mm, but he said not so. needless to say i now have a court date for a illeagally moded vehicle
:x

I think it may be something to do with danger to pedestrians if you hit them or something, the often frown apon spotties that stick above the bonnet line and bullbar.

I don't know if the max hight counts so long as they are only useable during high beam. Headlights must be below a certain hight though IIRC

i cant find anything on the qld transport site to say spotties cant protrude above the bonnet tells you a lot about scoops for ricers though.
maybe i'm not looking hard enough :?

I think you will find its because they are impairing your vision by being above the bonnet line which is also why the bonnet scoops can't be high enough to affect your vision of the end of the bonnet either. Good luck finding it on the Qld trans site....I've never seen half their rules in writing but best to ring the modifications hotline they SOMETIMES know what their talking about. Do you seriously have to go to court for your defects? I thought it would be just a fine? That's all I was up for a couple of years ago.

serious apparently they changed the law late last year so that illegal mods need to go to court. thats what the cop said and they kept me on the side of the road not 2km from home for about 30 mins

as i said i got what i deserved but i thought he went over the top as the speeding ticket was enough to lose my licence anyway and he would have knowen that

There might not be a specific rule saying that the lights have to be below the body line but there is a "feild of veiw" rule in ADR42/04 and the vehicle regs. Donw here they have a spacific test for it but you will have to contact QLD Transport to find out if they adopt a similar rule although since the introduction of the NCOP it might be different.

Here is the NCOP:

i also heard that some cops were using that field of vision rule to get ricers and 4WDs for windscreens stickers and rear window stickers.

are you sure the court appearance isnt for your speeding and not your mods?

no the notice to appear incourt says

that on the 2/3/08 at 1130 on such and such a street you drove vehicle 012 abc and it was illegally modified

and that is pretty much word for word

so for all of the others out there running big tyres in QLD be aware you will now go to court for this offence as will happen to me and i will lose my licence

As far as I know they have to be out of the wiper sweep area. Back window is fine. No different to full load and have to have both side mirrors.

It almost seems that since they have you for speeding already they trying to extract the most $$ from you by defecting the vehicle as well. Kinda like give an inch and take a mile.

This is the rule I am talking about, the swept area of the windscreen rule has gone in most states.

When you are checking the 11m, make sure your seat is in the correct position. Did you get a copy of the rule? If not get a copy & follow it word for word & you should be ok.

X2 what mkpatrol said.
The guys at DOT cant read more then 1 sentence of their manuels, so take down the appropriet details to show them or they will just complain n not pass it.

here is a link to code of practice page, the same rules and regs we have to use when doing a RWC check. the info should be in one of the links

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/Re ... _practice/

it states that the main HIGH beam lights may be fitted at any hight
AIS INFORMATION SHEET No. 1(a)
CODE OF PRACTICE
COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE MODIFICATION CODES

Headlights
Some new factory fitted headlights may appear to have a blue or yellow tinge. Advice from
the federal Department of Transport and Regional Services (formerly the Federal Office of
Road Safety) is that these colours can sometimes be seen on some of the new technology
lights when viewed from the side. However, these lights do emit white light in the required
angles and comply with the ADR’s.
Note that a main (high) beam headlight under the ADR’s, and now under TO(RUM-VSS),
may be fitted at any height above the ground compared to the previous height of 0.6 m to 1.4
m in the Traffic Regulation 1962.

Also apparently the defect notices are under the anti hooning laws so it may be worse if you re affend for example they may impound your 4WD

by chikoroll_
...how can they be hooning....or are these green neons on the bullbar?

just wondering are 35" tyres fitted to a GQ patrol legal in any state if you increase brakeing efficiency to match the original specs?

Need to be engineered - in any state which will allow large tyres to be engineered.

Hijacking the thread a bit but...

Are the spotlight rules in NSW the same as in QLD ?

Last time I was over there (OBC 2005) I got pulled for having roof mounted spots and no front number plate... the number plate was actually fitted on the roll cage but, as I was getting away with a warning I didn't like to point that out in case he took it badly ! UK regs mean you can have the front number plate on the roof as long as it's vertical and forward facing. I was driving from Dubbo to Melbourne so it could even have been Victoria when I was pulled.

Just in the process of making some demountable spot lights for my visit in May - would save me a load of time if I can make them fixed rather than demountable.
