k&N air filters on diesel engines
hey guys, has anyone used a kn air filter on the 2.8L diesel hiluxs? or any diesel engine really. is there much improvement? im running a snorkel with extractors n 2 1/4 exhaust.

K&N filters are desined to work better with more dirt on them, but in saying that im not to shore that it was Aust dirt roads that they where talking about. If you want to go an oil filter than go with uni or finer filter they have 2 sections to them and are easyer to clean than a K&N.

i would rather an oiled filter personaly the oil helps stop the dust. as for them cloging up easier bull s@#t it dosent mater what sort of filter you have if your eng sucks the dust into your air box your filter should stop it, so it shouldnt make any difference, and if the oiled filter cloged up sooner than a paper that means it stoped more dust meaning it did a better job
i have never had a problem with the oiled filter in my bike and it has seen heaps of dust i have had problems with a paper filter in my 75 series

dont know about a hilux, but 80series have a little catch can that attaches to underside of filter housing. If there is excessive amounts of dust it will fall away from a paper type filter and be caught in the catch can.
The oiled type dont appeal to me at all, its just another grubby maintenance job to remember, and IMO they would clog worse than paper in dusty conditions

The problem i see is that once they're coated with a thin layer of dust, the sticky oil (now covered in un-sticky dust) becomes ineffective at catching any more dust. Might have been my imagination but i could have sworn my 2h ran better once i swapped from a clean unifilter to a genuine paper element, and no more dust in the intake tract. Paper elements aren't as messy to wash either (not sure on the effectiveness of washing compared to a foam filter, however)

I use a finer filter in my hilux, I have used the same filter for about 4 years. If you take care of them they last. I use the k&n cleaning and oiling pack so you can clean and reoil in the field.
