went out on the weekend to test the zook and all went well but on the way home the oil light lit up so i pulled over looked at the level then got back in light went out so all good for the rest of the way home then tonight i gave the thing a bit of a clean and found oil in the air box not much is this bad??

Oil in the airbox could be two things....
If you drive like me you recently fell over and the oil flowed from the rocker cover into the airbox, but I don't see enough dents.

OR...
Your oil rings are shot and blow-by is pushing oil (mist) out of the rocker cover.

well i all most lay it down twice and that was fun maybe that could have somethin to do with it

how can i tell if rings are shot ?? and what do i need to do to fix??

compression test.
my motor had oil in the air box, was so bad that the air cleaner would block up. so i got rid of the air cleaner.
But i would say it is time for rebuild

rebuild wow zook moters dont last long mine only done 75'000 from new
its spent most of its life behind a bus going around aust

clean it out and do a oil change and keep a eye on the filter and see if it gets oil in it or you can take off the tube from the tappet cover . If it blows smoke out you might to rebuild the motor as they hate running cold as it wears the rings out [eg starting the car for a few minutes then turning it off just to keep the battery charged .Boner

The oil light lit up??? Mate your engine is rooted. If you check your oil regularly there's no way it should be able to burn enough oil to loose oil pressure unless it's really really worn.

Sierra motors will normally run 160-200K before getting this bad. My guess - if it's been towed and only used occasionally (and its over 20 years old) I reckon it will have suffered from lack of servicing/condensation/dust ingestion.

check your oil and monitor consumption. If it's more than about 1litre per 1000k you have a motor on the way out.

nop no smoke at all

the car is now a dd but work is only 2 min drive so only driving that far is wearing out the rings ??

oil was only a littel low i filled it when i got home but will keep an eye on how much gos in thanks steve

The oil light won't light unless there's almost no oil pressure. This is a significant problem- if you have a problem with the oil pump, you'll kill the motor pretty quick.

I say get a compression test and get your oil pressure checked too. Keep an eye on consumption, and see how you go.


Cold starts/short trips (maybe all this car has ever done if it was towed a lot) will really hurt any motor.

Some oil pressure switches don't like getting wet, although mine has never stuffed up in the zook, did in the commy once though.

try doing an oil change and put some thicker oil in it will last a while longer.

Run a oil like nulon semi synthetic with their a oil treatment in it it may help . As thats all i use in mine and i drive it hard every day

Pull the dipstick out , start the motor , be careful , if the dipstick has air coming out the rings are rooted , if you say the motor is only 75,000 k's , you mightbe lucky and get away with a simple bottle brush hone , new rings and gaskets , can be done with the block still in the car if the bore is suitable , easiest way to check is the size of the ridge in the bore left by the top ring , once the head is removed , roughly arround $400 dollars to do yourself , Cheers Paul.

One thing that no one has mentioned ist to clean out the hoses running from the rocker cover to the intake and airbox. (an emmission thing asnd it regulates the pressure in the sump etc)

Over time a oily sludge can build up restricting the passage. So you end up with a very narrow pathway for the air to flow which increases pressure enough to draw hot oil from the sump along with the air

I had the same dirty filter problem (and some pinging as hot oil hit the fuel going in) Cleaned it all out the probl;em went away (oil consumption drop too)

Just different ideas to try before you go all out and strip down a motor

Id be pulling the pcv valve out and cleaning it before anything and yes chect the hose isn't blocked with the vehicle at idle the crank case should have a slightg vacume on it.
If the valve should allow the engine to suck air from the crankcase and not allow air to flow the other way. If its stuffed there cheap http://www.suzistore.com.au/vpasp65/sho ... asp?page=8

Mine regulalry has oil in the air filter, it's the PCV jamming usually.

I use about a litre of oil for every 1500 k or so, but i'm also pretty sure ive got some block issues from a couple of overheats.
