Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi guys,

I've got a '92 Hilux dual cab (springs all 'round, disc front and drum rear) which appears to have a wheel bearing which is close to failing (lots of squeaks while free rolling etc).

What I was wondering is how hard is it to replace rear wheel bearings on a Hilux (ie is it as bad as the front hubs) or would I be better off trying to source a disc brake rear end and fitting that while I'm doing all this stuffing around?

On that topic, can anyone point me to a howto for a disc brake rear end conversion? I've found several cruiser ones, but had less luck with finding Hilux stuff.

rear bearings are more difficult than the fronts.


you have a locking collar you have to remove and replace.


Pretty much its pull the brakes down, pull the axle out, then put it in a vice. remove the circlip that holds the collar in place and use a cold chisel and put a few big cuts into the collar with it, then turn the whole axle upside down, hold onto the brake backing plate, and smack the axle into a block of timber on the concrete- should pop the collar off.

Replace seals and bearings, then put the collar (greased) back on, put the whole axle back into a rim to support it safely, and put some pipe thats big enough to clear the axle, but not the collar over it and bash it down to full depth with a BFH.

refit circlip, put the whole shebang back into the truck and reassemble brakes.


I paid $60 a side for a kit that had inner and outer axle seals, Gaskets, bearings etc.

It ended up being a dry uni joint in the end, so I had that replaced and she's all ready to go again
