You can /could get a fibreglass fitting from Graeme Cooper and LRA which goes on the side of the filter. It connects directly to the snorkel hose.

Ya dissy is the thing that will bring you unstuck. Pull the thing out and clean it up. Seal it with silicon anywhere water will get in,that means the cap as well. get the best plug leads you can. When driving in wet muddy stuff, mud gets on the leads ,so check them from time to time.Even take a rag to them to clean them if you have to. When you come across real deep stuff have clean leads and give them a spray with inox. Keep it clean and dry and it will run with water up to your screen..

watch out for problems when feeding in compressed air. Did the same off the main tank and bingo, switched on the air one day prior to swimming via the solenid valve and the car stopped dead. Water in the line emptied straight into the dissy!! So will need to fit a water trap in that line before the dissy (there's one off the compressor, but not on the return lines from the tank)...
