Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I am going to buy a patrol for missus struth.
GU our price range sort of excludes the late model 3.0Lt I think.

$40k seems to only get you to a 2005 3.0 patrol which I think is the old 3.0 not the new one with common rail.
Anyway we have been looking at 2005 4.8Lts on gas, 5 speed.

The idea is for the missus to drive it for three or four years before I take it over and convert it to a lifted tourer/half offroad mongrel. Touring for us would be 2 to maybe 4 days high country, not Simpson or canning.

Any advice from the Patrol owners on the forum would be appreciated. We drove an 05 4.8 on gas, 5 speed ex police horse corps today, it has a bullbar, winch with plasma and snorkel, I like it but we need advice on patrols as we have not had one before.

a mate of mine has a 4.8 manual on injected gas he raves about the econamy but it is a little gutless on gas

Do a search about the 4.8s on gas, heard they have problems compared to the 4.5 which are fine for gas.

stupid idea tryin to save money on fuel (on either diesel or guzzler) and if he doesnt really need a 4wd for 3-4 yrs (which I asked if he really does), dumb idea to try and make some $ on interest...

Well what better shopping trolley than a big petrol Patrol.
We had considered a territory for the missus, but at the end of purchasing the Patrol I intend to keep it for myself for quite a few years, it will be maybe 7 years old by then and that would do me fine.

In the meantime we can pack the family up and do trips into the high country in the stock patrol (which would be lifted by 2" before long anyway) the V8 4 Runner just isn't as family freindly.

2005 TD 4.2s are going for $50k plus, would love one but then I would settle for a late model 3.0 as well.

We could drop back to 98/99/00 4.5 Ti hamburger with the lot for about $20k, but it would be some 15 years old by the time I got it from the family.

Yep the 4 Runner will be a good toy for the next 5 or 6 years, hopefully longer if I keep working on it.
Cruisers are a rip off second hand, so Patrols seem a sensible choice.

Mate has a Territory, they are SHOCKING on fuel.. hes a shattered man, having to go Frankston to near the Ford factory North of Melbourne.... 3+ tanks a week of fuel, inc driving round for work.

4.2's are holding and in some cases going up, theres a thread on patrol forum, one went for $74,000!

Cost of fuel is no object in this discussion.

Which patrol to buy is

If I had the extra 10K I would fork out for a 2005/6 4.2 patrol tomorrow

Anyway saw a 2005 with 4.8, leather etc, etc on the web for roughly the right dollars.

So what year/model did they start putting the better 3.0l engine in?

I have heard the problem with the 4.8 0n gas is it cannot get enough gas which tends to make it run to lean which in turn burns out valves etc.
Mate take your time and i if i had $40 k to buy a pootrol i would get a 4.2 of any year after 2003 .

Why not keep looking around for a little older 4.2? would still be running in the 5-7 year time frame you have. I wouldn't be confident the same can be said for a 3lt.

I bought the missus a 2005 territory Ghia today.
About $15k less then the patrol I want.

Why pay extra bucks for the missus to drive my patrol for 3 to 4 years when in 3 to 4 years my options on used Patrols will be cheaper.

And who knows they just might bring out a new model with solid axles in the meantime, making my options for GUs even cheaper down the the track, or opening my options for the new model.

So I guess I will just play mountainpig in the 4Runner for a while yet.

I will join the Nissan club eventually though, even though I think Toyotas are well built, they are just absolutely bullcrap expensive.

Yeah I had a hire one once in melbourne, the best i could do was 12.9 with the cruise on going downhill on the Bolte Bridge, mind you thats a crap load better than a 4.8 Poo .

Gas it & it will be much cheaper.

Nice car to drive, shocking understeer compared to the Falcons.

I had the worst fuel economy ever out of my GQ on the weekend, I filled up at Khanchoban & got a hundred kays for the first 1/4 while camping at Geehi, then on the second day I used a 1/4 of a tank to go to Davies Plains & back to Geehi, prolly about 70ks all up. I used less to drive the 220ks back to Canberra from Dead Horse Gap, I even used less with the caravan on when I went to Coffs last year.

Yep they are thirsty but fuel price doesn't bother me too much, we can afford to drive our cars.

They are one very plush ride with all the creature comforts, and they get up and go for a big family suv.

Missus struth is v-happy atm
And I think I can handle driving around in one of these whenever I'm out of the 4B.
