veneering exterior panels....legal?
i won't touch the bullbar....(might be a loophole for the insurance....then again the tyres are already a loophole....)

why? because i am a bloody idiot with too much spare time and love timber, the fact that it pisses off the greenies is an incentive also (i am a solid timber based cabinet maker, and all my timber comes from old-growth forests...why? cuz pine is fugly!)

cost is not an issue, i have access to 1000 2.4x1.2 sheets of it for free. 5 sheets will do
i know it will probably get damaged when out bush, that's why i will use 3mm jarrah or ironbark on the lower area's, mahogany up higher with 4 or more heavy coats of two-pack @25% gloss
...hell if i get truely caught up in it, i might even give it a gold leaf trimming

...so...is it legal to do this?

I don't know if its legal or not but I want you to ring up the RTA, (or your states equivalent), ask them, record the conversation and post it up.

Or better yet, walk into one of their offices and ask the chick at the counter.... video tape it

Yep... PT Cruiser 5 door.. Started life same as the one in the background of the pic..
Note how rear side windows have been re-shaped with "timber".

but seeing as mine actually goes bushbashing and knows what mud, rocks and trees are, i still want the strength of the metal doors

jarrah is nowhere near as strong as the steel, ironbark would be closer...but the shockfactor also has to come into it...

How would you effectively glue veneer on?

What would stop water penetrating into the timber and warping it?
Timber trays on one tonners usually end up weathered bad

It'd be a recipe for rust I reckon, like the old vinyl roofs on HQs, as soon as they cracked or tore a bit, you end up with water under the vinyl and they rust.

What's Marquetry? Is that like Parquetry..(Lots of little bits of wood to make a pattern in a floor)

Problem is steel bends in a crash where timber splinters.
I wanted to make some nice timber door trims to match the Walnut dash in a Mini I had till my father (Shipwright) reminded me about timbers' inability to bend in a prang.

imagine doing it to a Jeep? They are already a fire hazard..

having the timber properly seasoned is the only way to stop it from twisting/warping....most of the junk you buy in stores is fresh from the nips jungle with minimum curing time.... all of my timber has been racked from 5-150 years

sandblast back to bare metal (the only thing that will cost me), 24hr epoxy resin to glue the veneer, dry out the vehicle for a week, soak with metho, dry out for another week (remove moisture in the veneer and anything that could affect the polish), then 2pack it

in the event of a crash, it all depends on the timber used, something like hickory might have a chance to survive it (excellent shock resistance) repair by steaming - mostly used in good timber handled hammers... i don't have much of this though....

marquetry is craftsmen quality (fine arts) attention of detail is to the millimetre
parquetry is a lot rougher, large scale work

not all timbers burn, a lot just smolder like asbestos does

I have seen some amazing timber trimmed cars, (Was about to say Woody, but relised how gay it would sound saying "I've seen some amazing woody's" )

would be going on my jackaroo, then redo it on the rodeo i will buy after this in a few years time (marquetry advertising, lion carving bolted on like a mackdog)

got a few things to build before i get the balls to do this, including the interior trims *cargo area is staying as vinyl, i use that a fair bit and don't look after it*.... and then think of a heap of designs for it

will probably end up being whenever i go on holidays that i do this, just park it in the shed and ride the pushie to home and back whilst i'm doing it

the woodies are my inspiration for this, and very rarely see them on the road

Add a 'to' between have and play then some "" around holiday road, and that sentence makes perfect sence.

start from scratch and build the entire car from wood. and while ya at it replace the engine with a steam engine.
