silverstone mt117 extreme review

on road they are noisy but bearable they squirm under hard braking but apart from a little vibration they seem to be fine
they are a bit loose on the fast gravel but will only slide if you force them
off road they bite in hard the self clean perfectly even in that real smelly sticky red clay they climb out of ruts easily and grip very well on the rocks they really like low pressures and willl perform better on the gravel at about 26 psi these tyres actually suprised me on how well they perform in all situations they are marked as a 35x11.5 15lt but measure up to 34.75 and 12 " wide.
To look at they look small untill you get up close (it must be the side lugs)
overall id give them out of 10
Road use dry.............................. 7
" " " wet .............................7(ish)
fast dirt ......................................5 . 5
deep ruts .....................................9.5
mud ............................................9 (10 if ya have horsepower)
hill climb clay...............................9
" " shale light rock................9
" " rock...............................8ish
rock.............................................8ish
sand.............................................tba
braking on road.............................7
baking off road.............................8
( these are my opinion only)
they seem to be soft and i think they will wear quick but at 270 per tire i think they will be great value for money
(will post up some pics when i get more time)
I hope this is usefull

I have 33x10.5 Silverstone MT117 Extremes on my Zook and I'd mostly agree with the previous post.
I run 20psi on road. On rocks I go down to 5.5psi in the front and 3.5psi in the rear (I have Staun's in the rear).
On sand up the beach they are better than I expected, they do grip hard and bite in so even at low tide lots of throttle is needed and economy isn't brilliant.
I've done 1500km and the shoulders are just starting to round off the rear lugs but the fronts still look like new. (I have a spooled rear which doesn't help).
For the money (and for a lightweight Zook) I heartily recommend them.

Do you guy's use them as a daily driver tyre?? I don't mind the look of the 117 sport tyre, has anyone run these? I'm up for new rubber in a month or two and was thinking that the extreme's would be abit inpractical for a daily driver..

I've been trying to figure out tyre options for my zook (as per this thread
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic.php?t=134826). One of my options I was considering was to use my current Simex MTs for road use, and buy a set of these Silverstone Xtremes for play time. To see a thread like this come up is good new to me, beacuse searching reveals some less clear cut reports.

This is good to hear, a recomendation from someone with the same car as me
.
I can get 31x10.5R15 Xtremes for $169 fitted and balanced, does this sound reasonable?

Mark, My car is a weekend fun machine ONLY. The only time it sees the road is to get to the bush and back.
I wouldn't buy MT117 Extremes for an everyday driver, I'd probably get the Sport's.

That is an excellent price... but.... beware of Silverstones sizing.
A 31 isn't 31" and 33's arent 33". Measure a tyre at the shop if you can.
The website lists my 33's as 832mm which is 32.7". In reality they are only 800mm (31.5"). Great tyre nonetheless as long as you are aware of this.
Next set of MT117 extremes I get will be 35's.

Gday highwaystar hows that hardtop goin for ya?
Mate based on what want33s has just said i'd opt for the 33" sizing if I was going with the silverstone xtremes...
Ive seen his rig in action and had a close look at the tyres. They are a bit closer to a 31, but still a bit bigger.
And they are awesome. Based on watchin his rig going up wet, muddy, loose rocky steps, you could hear the lugs litteraly biting in. And they absolutely
cut through clay!
From what little I've seen of these tyres, i'd say they are a pretty bloody good extreme tyre for the price, compared to the cost of simex & the likes...
Another good thing is the tall/narrow shape & pattern. You could run some more offset with them to achive a bit more stabilty, but still be narrow enough to keep the nimble manouvering characteristics of a zook like straddling ruts etc, tight turning etc... also the tyres wont stick out a mile from under the flares...
Im running 33x12.5 but thats only because I already had the rubber, and my zook is my budget play toy, and I dont wanna spend up big on new rubber just yet...

Interesting point - If you got nailed by RTA etc, for oversized tires, do they go on Measured size or whats marked on the sidewall?
Marked 33's but really 31.5 big difference in the context of defects/fines n shiz.

They'll go on what is written on the side wall....or whatever is the most convenient for them for nailing you!
i run 35 X 10.5 R16's.
Very happy with the tyre.

Yea reckon your right there lol
Then wonder how you would go taking it to court with the actual tires saying they are only 31.5 not 33..

I'll have a talk to the blokes who I buy my tyres from, they are really great blokes, and might even go to hassle of getting in one of each for me to measure. They don't keep 4x4 tyres like this in stock, as they consider them speciality items.
Do you reckon the 33" one would actually fit on a vehicle with only 2" sus lift, and no body lift? (without some handy work with the 9" that is
). I have the 2" bumpstop spacing up front, which keep my MTs a good 3/4" to an inch clear of the arches. Shame they don't make a so called 32", as that would probably be about right then.
Thanks.

Hardtops is great, I've got it setup on quick releases so I can have it off and back on again in under 5 minutes by myself
.
My Simex MTs are under 31" as well, measure about 30.4". Thats why Im thinking they will be better to keep for a road set as it gives the little 1300 a bit of a break. I'd be putting whatever I buy on my 15x7 -15 steelies, so not huge offset. My flares stick out a mile, and my tyres are underneath them, so thats never going to be an issue (despite this they don't keep the car clean .
).

i have put 300 klm on them on road so far and cant complain
they do measure up a bit smaller but for what i wanted they are great
i thought this thread would be usefull to people who like me have scoured the net looking for some honest usefull info on these tyres it would be good to get a few more people posting the same style of thread on different tires

i spoke to a few people that use the silverstone tyres and the response to them always seems to be the same. on a small light weight 4x4 they are excelent as they tend to have a softer sidewall to other tyres.(31-33's) Where as on a big heavy cruiser or patrol they tend to have too soft a side wall and alot of people have poped them off beads at low pressure (35's).
They do measure a bit smaller than sidewall states but dont most tyres??? they are pretty close to a 31 when new but wear the tread down and ya gonna be gettin close to a 29 or 30..
even simon from 4wdTv runs the silverstones and he told me the sports were a better allround tyre but the extreme's were way better in the mud.

You can chat to the guys at neta tyre service in northgate. They are the QLD distributers for silverstone. They helped get me the sponsorship when i raced. I used the 117's on my GU and a lot of people were suprised at how well they went. The first batch were too soft and were easily cut but they fixed that after some feed back. They have a softer tread than simex but still wear quite well. They are crap in sand because they cut into the sand too much and bog down. Thats why they work so well in mud. I raced on them for two years and after the first batch they were great tyres.

LEGALLY... you can't have any tyre that has a greater tyre/rim width that is wider than 1inch over the largest/widest tyre available on the affixed placard. And two inches in increased wheel track ( 1 inch either side)
BUT......I'm telling you now, I don't know of any TMU blokes or (TOGGIES)
that carry a tape measure, and if they do, well your a goner anyway. So long as it doesn't look rediculous and obvious the tyres hang out past the guards, most will not know. Just say yes sir no sir, three bags full sir.

I was thinking similar things cloughy.
I can't remember how many times I have posted my honest opinion on these tyres.
Honestly they are great offroad on everything except rock.
Onroad they are not the worst but not the greatest, I can say they do handle heavy braking well thou.
I liked the tyres as a whole but I generally drove rock and they left me frustrated at times.

I know two blokes running 33s on 4 Runners, they are an impressive offrroad tyre.
We drop down to 18psi every time we go offroad and these things seem to love boulder type work, you can here the lugs popping as they come off the rocks.
Road handling is not so good but you would really only use these as play tyres anyway.
At the price they are a bargain weekend tyre.
I don't know what sidewall construction they have and this will play a big part in wether or not I get some. I think they are only LT 3 ply.
But as I said for an agressive offroad tyre I don't think you can go past them on price.
Cheers

i was comparing them to other tyres of the same style ie aggressive offroad tyres
comparing them to the likes of claws
mudzillas, centipedes, crawres etc that i have had contact with
maybe im talkin them up a bit in your opinion but this was mine
i would give them 5 in the wet if i thought they were bad but they are not i would not recomend them for a dd but mine isnt

How bad are they on rocky surfaces? Will they safely hold traction when decending a reasonably steep rock slab hill? I presume your use of "Frustrated" refers to not being able to grab when climbing over rock shelves......
I think you would have to expect poor on road behaviour, as they are a Bias ply construction, with little road contact area, to boot.

I think they grip quite well on rock, when its dry anyway, wet is another story.
I don't have pics on rock but here is one on sprayed concrete at 45 - 50 degrees angle.

On sandstone and loose shale they were fine (actually quiet good).
It is the hard dark river bed style bolders that they completely failed on even when dry.
I do beleive they would slip and not hold traction if I attempted to stop at a fair angle but I only have one scenario of this and a mate with MTRs also had the same dramas on the same spot, the same day.
All in all I think they are a good tyre, just was unfortunate for me cause most the challenging stuff I enjoy is hard slick rock & this is the tyres only big downfall.
Its also exaggerated further when I am climbing a slick rock as soon as the front wheels (or the rears) hit dirt or a sandstond type contact came about the car would lunge forward in a great gain of traction.
Of course this is all my opinion only, but I did get comments from spectators at times saying they didn't seem to like the rocks.

Anyone know of delamination problems with the silverstones ,mate 80 series runs 117 sports and 2 of the 4 tyre (less than 10,000km on them) have bubbles.
Any feedback would be good .

I can't recall correctly but I do beleive I had two tyres replaced because of this. I had one of the ealier sets and I was under the impression this had been sorted.
Brett @ Austyre may recall this scenario better than I. Might be worth contacting him to see if your mate has any grounds to get them replaced.
edit: the bubbles showed up on my two tyres with well under 2000Ks on them.

I reckon this sums them up. Thats all I'd be buyin them for.
Theres no way lookin at them you would expect them to be a *good* road tire.
Large spaced tread blocks, and with the low klms people are saying they are getting from them, that means soft compound - soft blocks would squirm all over the place on the road.

You need to remember that they are an extreme off road tyre. Not for road use. They have been designed as a competition tyre only. Hence they do not have DOT approval. You can try and justify them for the road as much as you like but it wont cut it.

Cheers Mate. So basically "river rocks" was the problem (to put it simply). I know this is starting to deviate, but out of interest, what tyre have you found good for this type of terrain?
Want33's, how the hell did you get a Zook handbrake to hold in that photo! mine doesn't hold on my driveway

Just wondering how many K's you would get out of them?? My Last few set's have been bfg muds and find it hard to go past them as I get around 60 000km and apart from a few cut up lugs they do the job. I like the look of the sports as they look like claws and wouldn't mind a change if I can expect around the same k's from them..
