hey guys just bought a hilux a couple of weeks back...not a bad one either...but my brother and i were changin the timin belt the other day and noticed the harmonic balancer was flogged out,..i've heard this is one of the luxs problems especially on the ones with air con...the crank shaft seems ok. I was just wondering if there are any other common problems with them that would be easier to checked out while the things of the road...its a 1992 2.8D dualcab...cheers[/b][/i]

harmonic balancer itself flogged or did the whole pulley come loose?
both are common enough problem on a lot of diesels air con or not.
loctite the new pulley on, don't worry you will still be able to get it off.
chewing the block out behind the pump is another problem but you can't see it without pulling pump off. just make sure you replace your coolant regularly.

which pump??pwr steer?water?? not to familier with the engine yet...
The pully seems fine, just the balancer, got a new one for it today though should go in soon just need some new bolts for the power steer bracket/engine mount...they've gone egg shaped too!!
an don't worry i plan on usin a S**T load of loctite to make sure i won't run into this problem again!!

When he said use good coolant i'd say water pump and as for loctite i'd use enough but not to much as pain in the ass to clean heaps off next time you have it apart and did you do cam and crank seals idler and tensioner pully/bearings always the way you do a belt then they leak or get noisy after you do the belt and have to do it all again to change a pissy little seal

While you got the front of the engine apart, change the water pump, crank seal, belt idler and tensioner bearing too.
If the bearing on those things fail, you could do heaps of damage, as the valves hit the pistons.
