hi all

ive just been approved for some money to buy a new car and as i sold my rangie a while ago i have to go a landie. limit is 26k and hase to be a 2001 model or above. defenders are to mcuh but would be my choice so it has to be a disco.

whats a good model and what are there bad points ive owned a 93 and it was a lemon so im a bit scared. plus ive heard the 03 are a bit dodgy but he was probable a whinger.

im going for a hunt on week end

what are your thoughts

The facelifted disco2's are good.

Personally, I'd go a TD5 auto with ACE. Those with SLS reckon it's good also, although don't expect over a 2" lift with it. SLS comes with 7 seat packs.

yeah was getting withdrawals. the 2007 defender im thinkin they will be next company car. was hoping to get one for under 27k but they hold there value good and because i have to get a 2001 or later model they are all in the #30k mark.

so how r u guys going up there and hows your beast going

hey slunnie

i was looking at the V8 cause was told the Td5 was sluggish with the auto behind it. what are those terms ACE and SLS

as for mods im waiting to get a defender to do that but i bet i will do something to the disco ha

If ya dont mind tearing the plastic rear bar off the D2 u should be happy with one tho like slunnie says the max u can get one up in the springs is about 70 mm therebouts we got my brothers D2 up about that much and fitted little bit bigger tyres tho some guys have lifted em higher ...

As for the ACE its active cornering enhancement its just a hydraulic ram on the swaybars which stiffens em up at a set speed works well ....

The SLS is self leveling system and is just airbag rear springs works good for towing and load carrying tho id rather rear coils and internal air bags ...

Also dont get a 2001 unless its got the CDL center diff lock as they droped them for a while and thought traction would suffice but its crap and every body who has one wants to fit a CDL my brother went through the same delema and if ya get one that was a non CDL job and has it fitted make sure it has the factory style selector or one like it as the other ones like AMV and the like r shizz we ended up fitting the factory style to my brothers after 2 failures with the AMV shizz .....

My opinion unless heavly modded the D2 wont cut the same mustard a 2in lifted rangie with 31's will unless ya like breaking shyt and that costs more money go buy another rangie and save for a fenda ya know ya want to :D :D :D :D

The TD5 I tend to think is the pic of the motors. They're not sluggish, but they do have some turbo lag, which is masked significantly by the auto as you don't back of for gear changes etc. If you need more power, the options are a lot better for the TD5 than the V8 as with a chip you can be up from 101kw to about 140kw, and then intercool up to about 170kw/520nm. There are quite a few running around like this, but you are stressing the motor and gearbox be it manual or auto.

For SLS 50mm is about it these days, though I believe if you want to work it you will get more than that. Coils, I've seen setups up to 5" lifted now.

ACE is also really good offroad as it works like swaybar disconnects and will give about 5" more articulation.

The D2 does have a longer tail than the D1 etc because the made the boot bigger.

I'm not sure that a D2 will break more than a RRC to be honest. The driveline does seem to be a stronger build throughout and all of the HD upgrade gear is available. The suspension is significantly stronger also. But all of this said, the D2 is probably 500kg heavier than a RRC which is most definately an offroad gain.

found a disco its a 2002 ES and its fully optioned its a v8 and doesnt have centre diff lock from what he said. but that said this car is destined to be a shopping trolley as by end of year im getting a defender for me. as soon as i get it i will post some pics but it is a fine example of what luxury 4x4 is and the standards of land rover.

i smacked myself as i (or someone else inside me ) looked at a GU i nearly booked in for therapy

cheers for the advise guys and see you out there

here is a top gear episode that makes me proud to be a landie lover

yes you can lift a disco a little more then 70mm sorry lokka your wrong there mate every one advised me that anything over 70mm will vibrate etc etc but no mine is lifted 130mm plus and no vibrations I have steering casters fitted and that's made the steering surprisingly quite good

Yes a fender is more robust but if you don't have the pennies go the Disco and the Disco is more comfy steel bar front and rear sliders and Disco is just as robust I reckon other then the more electrics hehehehehehe

I don't have CDL fitted to my 99 and it handles fine however I do have lockers I actually like the traction control

A standard TD5 Auto is at about walking speed its what turned me off I was also told that there way to unreliable but if I did it again I would go the TD5 Auto and trick it up a bit 400km to the 90 litre tank out of V8 hurts a bit
