I've always just used exhaust pipe - it's quite heavy wall at 3" - plenty strong enough. It's about 1.6mm thick.

he next step up would be schedule 5S Stainless- it's 2.11mm wall.

Stainless is the best as it won't rust or corrode. The last thing you want is flaky bits going into your air intake. :?

Any decent exhaust shop will have 3" S/S exhaust pipe, just use that mate.

I'll give you a hand so it looks like mine

You don't have an air filter? surely the bugs and leaves are a bigger problem than the flaky bits?

I have run a mild steel snorkel on my G wagen for absolutely years and have no evidence of "flaky bits" at all. Exhaust pipe is aluminised and doesn't corrode easily at ambient temperatures.

Just had my original stainless snorkel copied to put on my newer Rocky.

Cost about $150 for them to bend it up and weld some mounting tags on that i had pre-cut and tapped with threads.

All one-piece 3" stainless steel, mandrel bent. Not sure on the wall thickness. Not heaps thick or heavy but plenty strong enough. The way i've got it mounted the whole quarter panel will probably let go before the snorkel falls off.

Some pix of the first one...
