mechanism that shuts fuel off
mechanism that shuts fuel off
i need some advice from the experts here i am having some trouble with the fuel cut off thingy (or what ever you call it) coz the one on the car doesn't seem to be working and someone had put a cable on the fuel cut off so to stop the car u had to pull this cable and i would say i wont be able to pass the pits with a cable to shut the car off. I was given a spare one along with heaps of other parts so i pulled it apart and cleaned it gresed it up etc and put it on the car. Sometimes when u turn the car on it moves like to far and then shuts the car off again, i turn the key right off and turn it on again and it's fine, it does it sort of every now and then and sometimes it does this 2-3 times in a row. The car is 81 SD33 and my question is there a way i have to set it up or can someone shed some light on this for me as it is a bit weird
thanks
thanks
i'm no expert but i had the same sort of problems in my maverick. I ended up replacing the fuel cut off solenoid (about 40 bucks from a diesel injection place) which was a prick of a job, easy but fidly. If you do this then be careful of the small spring that can pop out. One way of checking if it is working properly is to make a little jumper wire out of alligator clips and take the wire from the fuel shut off solenoid straight to battery positive, then start the car. It should start and if you turn the key off it should stay on, remove the wire from battery and engine should shut off. After replacing the solenoid it was fine for a while and then started playing up again. So i looked further into the wiring, the engine control fuse is on the same circuit and I suggest you check not only the fuse but behind it where the little tabs in the fuse box are. My fuse was ok but when i looked twice the little tabs had snapped off so they weren't making a good connection, i confirmed this with an ohmeter. Took the box out and soldered two pieces of wire in place with two spade terminals for the fuse to go on to. All this took quite some time to work out for something that really is quite minor, hard too find intermittent electrical problems. Hope all this makes sense and good luck with it.
That would be the injection pump controller on the SD33 motor.
It has an electric motor that turns the enrichment on when starting and opens the fuel line to pump thru the lever from the unit to the side of Inj pump (inline type). When oil pressure comes up (thru inj module) it goes to run setting. When engine turned off or if oil pressure drops away (ie reverse running) it turn off fuel.
Id say the motor or prob the contacts under the cover are corroded or burnt. so a piece of wire is substituted to manually turn to onn/off.
Open the cover and have a look.

Thats ok BigMav thanks for your reply, this injection pump controller that i put on the car was all dirty and full of corrosion inside, so i cleaned it out as best that i could and regreased it. I didn't really try and get the cogs out and check contacts underneth. The one i took off the car (was missing the rod on it and didn't work) i opened that and it was fine inside and didn't look dirty and i was able to get the cogs out, so i will maybe tomorrow pull this one apart again and pull the cogs out and check all the contacts and go from there.
hope it works

Mq080 had the same problem with his unit. When he bought it, the previous owner had installed a wire under the steering column to shut the fuel off and had disconnected the injection pump controller. Dumbdunce from the forum fixed it for him, so PM him for some advice. Other than that, i believe the relays that control it are under the cover between the drivers side battery and the body. Checking all the connections there may help.
If you want a spare 60 for bits-

if the motor runs at all the problem is different to MQ080's one, it has the contacts in the relay completely blown away, and also the motor/gearbox was full of mud. if the motor starts then immediately shuts down I'd look down the oil pressure idea - if indeed the SD33 takes a signal from the pressure sender to the run computer.
best thing you could do is junk it and get a landcruiser
