jackaroo auto transmission problems! HELP!

Hey guys.
Ive been meaning to post a introduction thread up but was trying to make the car run first.
Got her running and was excited enough to go take her for a drive and the sign of disappointment.
I put her into drive (auto obviously..) and it wont engage. It will engage into reverse, but only when your reving the car at around 2500 thousand.
I played around with it and managed to get it to go forward, but only when the rev's were as high as 3000, but would only go in 4x4.
Info:
97 jackaroo 3.5 v6.
4 speed auto.
260xxx k's.
Really annoying now as i was getting all excited to take it 4x4ing.
Whats my options? Reco gearbox, or is it a simple fix? what sort of dollars am i looking at? Im on apprentice wages and budgeting obviously will have to occur.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks guys.
John.

how much did you pay for it?
....if you just bought it, report the bloke who roadworthied it.... sounds like a melon
have you tried manual gear 1,2,3?
the power button? (shifts at higher rev's/speed)
the winter button? (starts car in 3rd gear)
jack up the rear of the car, and give it some peddle, what is happening? is there any drive to the back wheels?
is the handbrake engaged?
jack up the entire thing and slap on 4wd, (hubs locked) what is happening?

I didnt just buy it, has been in the family since new.
Problem is, i stacked it during a 'try hard' 4x4 down a hill, locked the brakes up and the tyres just skidded down hill, mounting the car on a cut stump at around 30kph.
No chassis damage, just bubbled the floor under drivers footwell.
Thing was though, i floored it in forward and reverse and then the car just shut down.
Long story short, i popped a main fuse, replaced that, the car ran again, but just wont move.
I managed after playing around with manual shifting, 4x4, low range, high range, power, winter i managed to get the car to drive, but only when the revs were up around 3500rpm in reverse, and 4000 to go forward.
I think just quietly im up for a reco box.

...you hit forwards to reverse at high revs/speed?
that'll do it...
get a replacement, they are one of the last pieces to go in a wrecked jackaroo, so off to the wreckers you go with a grand in the pocket and a slab of beer on the shoulder

Yeah easier said then done. Ive called every wreckers in the southern hemisphere, and they just laugh and tell me good luck. So pretty much im stuck with a vehicle that wont move, and will cost me $2200 + hard parts for a reco
Any chance it could be just the torque converter and could i replace just that?
Also if the gearbox fluid was low, would this cause a problem with engaging? Anyone know if theres special oil to put in the gearbox for the jacka-poo-packer?
