Hi guys, looking at buying a toyota 4runner diesel 1985 with 325000kms o the clock. Anything i need to look for when expecting it body and engine wise? Also was going to use it as an off road vehicle, are they any good off road? Are they any good in water without a snorkel? What basic mods do you recommend? And generaly do you think they are a good car?Is the diesel carburettor a big problem on hill climbs? Thanks

If you get a big splash of water in a diesel, you may as well say - "There goes $3-7K to start. Even with a snorkel, you didn't fit, how do you know it has been done correctly and seals well. Also, muddy water in the alternator will, 9 out of ten times, kill it instantly and you cant get a snorkel for that.
Good luck in the mud and water!

diesel carbys... hmmm..... i dont think you will be having ANY problems there on hills... or anywhere else for that matter...
as for the water thing, whack on a snorkle, sikaflex up anywhere thats not properly sealed, and be done with it.
at least with the alternator, even if it dies, you can still drive home on it, unlike a petrol

Should perform well offroad if it has a solid front axle, with a few mods they are very capable.
Cheers
