Hi, I just bought a GQ Shorty with 2inch body and small suspension lift on 33inch bfg muddies and at 85km/h or so the car starts to wander over the road, however it always corrects itself without input from the driver. Is this due to the tyres or maybe worn steering components. Thanks for your help.

pay to get a frontend allignment done just to be sure.....
I'd suggest looking at the idler arm bushes first up followed by tierod ends.
I've just replace my idlerarm bushes and she drives like new again.
Also is there too much movement in the steering box ???? this also causes wandering at speed.

sounds to me like caster correction bushes required...
some suffer worse than other shortys.
try everythign else as you usually would, bushes everywhere else, wheel bearings, etc..

There are no idler arms on Patrols. The thing V8Patrol is talking about is called a bellcrank which is not actally fitted to GQ patrols. The bellcrank acts as a relay from the steering box to the draglink due to the location of the steering box and suspension.
On a GQ the draglink is fitted directly to the steering box. The best way to check the ball joints on the ends of the draglink and tie rod is to have someone rock the steering back and forward while the wheels are on the ground. While that person is rocking the steering you can inspect each of the ball joints idividually for play. Pretty unusual for a GQ to have worn steering components, my old mans GQ has just over 330k in it & they are all in perfect condition. Even my MK,s steering gear is original at 300k although my bellcrank needs some attention.
The other source of your problem may be your larger tyres are causing the car to track (follow the ruts in the road) in which case You may have to look at castor correction but from what you say it centres itself which indicates the castor is ok. If this is the case then the Tyres will becausing it and you will heve to either live with it or put 31's back on.
I hope this helps.

Still, I have never replaced a set of them either.

anyway, enough hi-jacking!
I would check, in this order:
panhard bushes
steering gear
wheel bearing pre-load
swivel bearing pre-load
steering box adjustment, as a last resort, they are a bitch to get right and easy to fawk up.

thanks for all your help.
When I got the roadworthy done on it the front wheel bearings needed adjusting and this seems to have pretty much fixed the problem, my only issue now is clutch fade, possibly air in the lines hopefully not a wrecked slave or master.
thanks again
