This is probably obvious to you guys, but which way does the rear tailshaft go on a 81 MQ diesel the fat part towards the gearbox or the diff???

on the GQ/GU the fat part goes towards the front but everyone swaps then around when they do a lift as it gives them extra clearance to the crossmember just behind the tx case.
seems to work no worries either way.

what about the weights on the tailshaft wont it cause axel bounce or vibrations at higher speeds turning it around.

if it will fit , put the sl;ip joint to the diff end, less likely to get bent on things that way..

The factory fitted tailshafts on a MQ are placed with the slip joint close to the transfer on both the front and rear shafts.
Mods depending as to how you fit them up but it doesnt really seem to matter
