Geniscan OBD11 Scanner Question

Geniscan OBDII Code Reader:
I have been given a Autel Geniscan GS300 code reader to read and manipulate the codes on the on-board computer of my vehicles. I have a 1998 Magna TF sedan and a 2000 Pajero NL wagon. Both have the OBD connection sockets cleverly hidden inside the vehicles.
I have connected the scanner to both vehicles and it goes through its checking routines, scanning through various modes as listed in the owner's manual. Then it stops. No codes are shown. I might add that the Check Engine Light on both vehicles is normal - it goes out after a few seconds and doesn't come on in normal operation.
Now for my question: No codes are shown. Does this mean that there are no codes to show (ie nothing is wrong), or is the scanner not working properly? Does anyone out there have experience of using one of these scanners when there is nothing to show up? What should I expect to see?
