Broken axle - Defender 130

Went away with 3 other cars the weekend.
We were driving up a track, with a bit of a rocky outcrop, when one of the guys in his Defender 130 snapped a rear axle.
When we pulled the axle out, a couple of inches was missing off the end, so it was still inside, and the end of the axle we had, the splines were twisted pretty nicely.
Is this common for the landies. He said he had a new one put in after the last one let go, and land rover told him they put in a heavy duty one this time. The guy is always careful and does not drive it hard.
Is there something stronger he can get at all :?
Thanx guys.

make sure you get flanges as well.
with aftermarket flanges you can remove the outer oil seal and the spline will be lubricated.
preventing another problem of worn (unlubricated/dry)splines.
plus they look BLING BLING.
