hi guys
like to sort this by the end of the weekend.

Got a 96 vitara lwb auto that slips badly in reverse and won't engage 3rd and overdrive. First and second are fine. if you rev out second and back off it just free revs.

pulling the pan off tomorrow to have a look but if worse comes to worse i,ll throwin another box.

will a 5 speed manual bolt up to the transfer?
are drive shafts the same lenghts ?
does the engine comuter vary between an auto and the manual (e.g does the computer control the auto or is it a seperate controller for the box.
Are diff ratios dfferent?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

i know this sounds dumb but have you checked the trans fluid level? had this problem with a trimatic the fluid was realy low(not even on the dip stick). filll it up to the right level and never had a problem again.

search the vit bible.

i beleive the ecu is gbox dependant.

there are some different ratios

5speed will bolt up fine, may need different transfer not 100% sure.

thnx for the replies

looks like the ecu does the trannie but wonder if an auto ecu will still run ok with manual as its really only outputing to the box??? and other than a spee sensor it might not effect the actual running of the motor unless there is a limp mode that governs the engine speed??

oil level is full tough he oils not real clean.

Would be interested in the 5 speed gear box 11_evl problem is although I live in brissy i,m in sydney picking up the car (was suppose o only have a reverse problem). I,ll let you know howI get on

if the fluid isn't clean that could be yoour problem. things could just be getting blocked up and no oil getting back to the pic up so no fluid to work the servos. pull the pan off and cange the filter if it has 1/ new oil. will cost alot less then changing the box if it thats it

Have you checked for fault codes? You can do this for the auto.

Also does it shift manually?

It could be a number of things including the solenoids.

ok.
went to get some fresh oil this morning and reverse worked perfectly whilst cold and as soon as it warmed up started slipping again .
on the way to the autoshop after reving out first and second it picked up top gear. I clickedoff overdrive andthird was there.
a couple hundredmeers later both gone aain. so I was confident a pan and valve removal and clean up would be a fix.
after getting the valve assembly out ( no mean feat, quite intergrate) I notice the thin gaskets where quite brittle and cracked in places and then I found this tiny pin lying on the rag and also a little locking plate. cannot for the life of me work out were they came from

Neadles to say I need to get back to brissy sunday so i,ve tracked down a secondhand auto for $450 no exchange.
box is out so hopefully all will be good.
I,ll worry about the manual conversion at a later date.

Thnx heaps guys.
