4Runner Calipers on 60 series LC

I have read on MUD that in the US this is a popluar mod, but the brakes on my 60 seems fine and lock up no problems with my 35z, so I've never been really interested in this mod. However my mate is wrecking his 93 V6 4Runner and I can get the calipers for next to nothing. Has anybody here done this, and is it worthwhile?

I fitted 4runner calipers (i believe the smaller 35mm ones from the 4cyl version) and an 80s master/booster. Improvement was out of site - tho my standard master and booster were pretty shot as it was.

Yeh, I was wondering whether the noticed improvements by the MUD guys could mainly be contributed to the install of new components, not neccessarily the change in calipers.

I'd imagine you've read the same stuff I have on Mud Mark. The 93' V6 seem to be the go. All I can see is that bigger pistons give a greater clamp on the rotor.

Let us know how you get on hey.

Hi Joel. I might get the calipers off him and then keep them for when I have nothing to do one rainy day! How's your 60 going?

I am thinking the hzj75 caliper is the same as the V6 4runner, is this correct.
The HZJ caliper has two large pistons and a larger pad, see pics. I noticed a big improvement when I changed mine especially when the truck was loaded with my toolboxes and materials. My old HJ75 calipers were fitted with stainless steel pistons and were in good condition, see pic. Hope this helps. cheers.

No, late hilux and hzj75 have 35mm pistons, the v6 runner calliper has 45mm x4 same as 80 series....but with mounts that fit 60/75 series...saw a set on ebay today

Cool, Thanks Andrew, The HZJ calipers are a good improvement so I feel the 4runner calipers with the 80 master cylinder would be terrific [better upgrade still]. Any need with the 4 runner calipers to re adjust the load proportioning valve? regards gazza

If you put v6 callipers on, the front wheels can be locked with big tyres easily....i found with my old 60 i lost height on the springs....the brakes were that good...i did find the rear would do very little, but the 60 proportion valve was not adjustable and on the fire wall under the master...i would suggest you screw the proportion valve up as far as it will go ....if.... you never drive around empty....
If you have a disc rear end there is another real nice upgrade that is very easy on the rear....Cressida front callipers bolt straight on and are double the piston size.

cressida front calipers on the rear?

they just bolt to the housing or what?

Yeah...the cressida front calliper centre is identical to the prado/75/78/79/80 and 100 rear calliper...all you do is pull the centre calliper bit off the cressida outer housing and put it in the cruiser housing, same bolts that allow it to slide....there is a small amount of metal you need to relieve where the piston will contact the frame, 20 seconds with an angle grinder and your finished the mod....same lines and everything....however....they then need to be adjusted back on the proportion valve as they work too well :)
I have them on my 80 and the abs takes over if i throw the anchors out...

Are any spacers or anything needed to bolt these up ? and how does the master cylinder cope with these and a drum rear end ?

cheers

If you have a disc rear end, they just bolt in with a small amount of grinding...the calliper centres are identical only one has a 60mm hole in it (and piston) the std one has a 35mm hole....

If you are talking about the 4runner front discs, they bolt straight up, but you will need to cut the backing plate a little as they are large than the standard calipers. On MUD some guys upgrade to a larger master cylinder (1" I think - std 60 is 7/8" I think), but it needs to be off a vehicle with drum rears. Some others on MUD don't bother.

I run 80s master (1") hilux front calipers (35mm x 4), std drum rear and std proportioning valve (not modded to suit ~3" lift in rear} with no apparent problems. Only locked the rears once - in the wet - so the rear works but not too well (diff lock probably helps)

That setup sounds good mate, I might have to go that setup, my brakes are shithouse anyways, can barely lock the 31''s up on the road, maybe if its wet, tried fresh fluid, new pads, crap still.

Hey Mark, did you run with this idea?

To answer an earlier question, the hzj75 and the later than 90 hilux run 4x35mm pistons and are a great upgrade to any 60/70/40 disc front. The v6 4runner and surf run 4x45mm which is identical to 80 series but with housing that fits a 40/60/75 and are that much better again. You can get away with the std master, but the pedal travel is long and it is easy to lock front brakes. I would buy a set if you can get them cheap enough.
I ran v6 runners on my 60 with 80 booster and master and 35's with no problems.

No! And I found out only last night that my mate sold the wreck. Apparently he has the winch for me, but we were waiting for a weekend when he was free to get some other gear off it. I'll call him up and see if he has let it go yet.
