advice on: 82 hilux 2.4d

Im thinking bout looking at an 82 hilux with a 2.4d and 5 speed in it. They are of unknown kms and the body has done 400 000kms. What should i be looking at it has a bit of rust in the roof and doors but should be easy fixes i hope.
I have been told that the chassis rust away on the early model luxs. Also to look for timing belt/chain rattle, it there anything else major i should be concerned about? I can pick it up cheap as a project i dont mind a bit of work.
I have seen rebuld kits for 900ish from ebay would neone reccomend these?
