whats that noise....

howdy,
swb gq, 2+2 lift.. auto, tb42
for the last few months I've had a vibration sorta noise when under medium engine load at about 50-60k's. (ie: up slight hills).
its definitely drive train somewhere and not engine speed related.
Its towards the front, so I'm thinking auto or transfer.. but that sounds expensive...
Any ideas what it might be ?

I'd guess tailshafts and/or uni's, or if you're unlucky diff issues (ie pinion bearing).
Definatley the front, or sounds like the front? You haven't forgotten to unlock the hubs?

sounds like front/middle.. hubs are definitely not locked.

err.. never ? well.. nothing more than oil levels etc since I've had it.
did have fresh auto oil and filter a year or so ago though.

Are the hubs jammed?
Sounds like the noise mine makes when the hubs are locked in.

I could jack it up and spin a wheel to check, but I think the hubs are ok.
Do you get that noise all the time or just at certain speeds ?

The weakest link in the auto is the converter. When they start to go you will get a vibration that's very similar to a tailshaft vib so you need to check your uni's etc before you decide to pull the auto. If it is the auto you need to get it fixed ASAP coz it will die very quickly otherwise.

I agree
Check the unis, tailshaft slip joints, diff pinions, wheel bearings, and if you cant find a problem there - take it to a specialist auto transmission mechanic.

auto is what I'm dreading.. cos i've only ever heard expensive things about patrol auto problems..

I see plenty of second handies on eBay. Its not a solution, but if you get your auto looked at and its going to cost a fortune, thats where i'd be looking. Even the classifieds section on here can be handy.

Update.. it was the diff pinion bearings, and the uni's were getting ugly aswell so they were replaced..
all fixed now.. no noises. all good.. just cost $$ :(

better then rebuilding an auto tho
