A while ago I picked up a 1990 GQ lwb wagon 4.2 turbo. I have a few things in mind for this Patrol, like a body chop, some tough bar work and try to get the soot pump to blow less black smoke and make more power. The main thing i'm having trouble with is what suspension to run, i only want to lift it 3-4'' enuff to run 35's. I was hoping to get some different opinions on whats good.

4-5 inch coils, hd front med rear
toughdog shocks to suit a 6 inch lift
drop boxes
16mm longer lower arms and standard bushes all round
80 series bumstops in the front
and coils retained in the rear

not the biggest flex monstor but it will be balanced flex well and handel well off and onroad

Depends what you want to drive with it, in general what V840 said is very good advice. In my experience 50mm bodylift and 2 or 3 inch spring lift is a good way to get 35's under your rig without going to high in the suspension. Mines got 2 inch body lift and 5 inch coils with 37's and it is just too tall, but mine is built for winch challenge events and I want to be able to drive on nasty side angles without shitting myself that its gonna roll. I will be dropping mine down to 3" coils ASAP after my last drive.

Good luck with it, hope that helps.

i agree with what bogged said only lift it as much as need be, for me thats 4 inches in its current carnation but i will be lowering it to a 3-4 when i redo things and chop it up a little

dont waste your time on body lifts all they do is lift your COG and crack cabs

Different springs suit different needs and applications. You need to get spring/shock combination that will suit your purpose. You could spend $1,000s on suspension but if it doesn't suit what you want to do with it then it is mone wasted.

I am of the opinion you get what you pay for with any suspension setup. If you go to a reputable suspension place, you will get great advice and get a setup that suits your budget and application.

I personally run Koni shocks because they suit my purpose, and suit myt style of 4wding and type of trip that I do. You will get people on here that think they are a heap of $hit and you will also find others that think they are tops for the same reason I mentioned.

Suspension is all about what you want to do with the vehicle, and how much money you are prepared to spend on achieving the ultimate ride. Two different three inch lifts can be very different in terms of the way a vehicle drives.

Hi Wormz

I have ordered a 4" Lift for my GU Patrol. It is a mixed kit that I made up myselft and comprises of:

* 4-5 inch Heavy Duty Dobinson Coils.
* Pro Comp Shocks.
* Superior Drop Boxes for castor correction.
* Extended Brake lines.
* Draglink to align steering wheel after lift.
* Adjustable Panhards to bring diffs back into line.
* Swaybar Disconnects, so that I can lose the swaybars in the rough stuff and gain extra wheel travel.
* Longer brake hoses to allow for extra travel.

All this should arrive any day. Cost me $2320 Delivered from 'Suspension Stuff' off this forum. So when I get it in I'll call round and take you for a spin.

Phil.

4'' Dobinson Coils great
KONI RIDEPRO SHOCKS
good shocks value 4 money

Im in the middle of doing the chop on my GQ LWB into an extra cab
and chopping the front guards to fit 36'' MAXXIS Creepy Crawlers
3''coils with 30mm tough dog coil spacers.

Bodylifts are very dangerous in a accident.
You want the best centre of gravity as possible using Landcruiser offset
Sunny's 15''x10''

i actually think your a little off with your statement, they lift your car with very little effect on your cog due to the fact that your only moving the body upwards where as a suspension lift raises your whole cog. they are known to be harsher on your body mounts though if they are not tightened properly due to extra stresses imposed by the lift blocks. although in saying that i run a 50mm body lift and would never take it out!

your height depends on what weight your truck is and how its set out. i have 2 GU's one wagon and a coil cab ute both with the same set up which is 5inch efs kits. soft rate coils in the ute and med/heavy in the wagon. the wagon was taller previously but was nasty on any sort side angle but the EFS kit has made it quite nice.( you learn from your mistakes.)
I think a 3 to 5 inch kit with no body lift and trimming too fit bigger tyres is the way too go. if it is too tall with the full touring kit fridge etc up high you will end up in all sorts of dramas on side angles.
i can highly recommend EFS products. their shocks are so much better than tough dogs.
