How do you tell the difference between the 4.8HP and the 2.5 HP motors? Is there a physical indicator or do you need the detail off the motor plate?

Not always the case.
Some old Warns had 2.5's.

the 2.5 had just a steel plate on the brush end with a nipple bit for the shaft in the middle. the join line for the end cap is right on the end of the motor they will usually be black in colour
the 4.5's have a end cap that covers the brush assy bringing the join line about 1.5 inches down the motor body.
the 6hp have the heatsink brush cap.
2.5, 4.5 and 6 respectively

not my winch but i run one in the same spot, its either jsut a breather or used to put 2 or so PSI of air into the winch housing to prevent water ingress when wading.
but most likely a breather as the drum seal isnt that great you would probably jsut pump out the oil!

go the 6hp with a mal leslie end cap, tap it and run a lilo inflator on your 'in' solenoids, so when you winch in it runs cold air through your motor and wullah, constant winching

No Bigcam, I had the winch out and just a
little movement of the drum left a teaspoon of oil.
Tapping the pump into the solenoids is a good idea Cooki.
