Engine options

Can anyone tell me if it is legal in QLD to put an earlier model motor into a later model truck if you use a lp gas only set up???

For example like what Jeff Schnieder (spelling?) did with his 80 series. He had a 383 chev with just gas then a carby in the glovebox if he needed it (ONLY FOR OFFROAD USE I AM SURE!)

Also what would be a good gas kit to suit something like this?

This may have been asked but I am a search retard!

Just looking for the easiest cheepest way!

It's got to meet emmissions regs for the year of the vehicle from memory. Hence most things on lpg are ok whether carby or whatever cause lpg has low emmissions ;)

Is that based on actual emissions output or just arbitrary hardware "standards"?

Ie - let's say I pulled out my 10-year-old carburetted TB42 and threw in a 20-year-old EFI motor of some sort. If it actually ran very clean, would the age matter?

Not really as you would have to pay to have the vehicle emmision tested to prove that it nmeets the requirements. This is because the minimum emission standards for 10 years ago are strictor ( is that a word?) than the one from 20 years ago regardless of whether the emmisions are better or not.

I think it was more of a hypothetical .. even tho the carb motor in the patrol is still about 20 years old :D

works in vic. :D

From what I know.

Puttin an EARLIER model motor in a late model truck - you'd still have to meet emission laws for the year of the late model truck. As long as you pass it. eg LPG etc. Should not be any problems at all.

What truck is in question??

Yeah just a hypothetical question at this stage.

I am just doing as much research as I can before jumping into another project.

OK CHANGED THE TOPIC TO ENGINE OPTIONS. Hopefully to explore some options and see what people think are the best options in this area when building a truck.Truck will be a post 90 model patrol (yep!)
So let me have it!!!
remember budget fellas!

Petrol 6 (as in 4.2 of the nissan or toyota) with maybe a turbo or supercharger?
v8 conversion
diesel with turbo (Main drawback here is finding a vehicle with low km diesel that doesn't cost the earth!!!!) to be honest even though I know all the advantages of the diesel I am keen for a petrol this time round.

Yeah I know this is vic and the rules are different but....

The rules are straight foward.

to put say a 20 yearold motor into a current model car then the emmissions HAVE to meet the current emmisions for thet car, thats why 99% of people doing this go straight LPG, it bypasses the emmissions test.

Also if you wish to run petrol then by law you can not legally connect up the emmision units unless your quallified to do so, but it must still meet the required emmissions levels set for the car you are installing the motor into !

It isn't just exhaust emmissions either..... they also include, ....
Oil vapour emmissions from the engine rockercovers
Oil vapour emmissions from the engine crankcase
Petrol vapour emmissions from fuel tanks

Through the "reburn" setup we get rid of most of the other emmissions but they still add up into the total amount of fumes that are passed through the exhaust system ...... there is a limit on the amount of noxitious fumes that can be exhausted !

I had mine tested just before crissy.... it scraped through by a poofteenth !!!! :D

A quad cam V8, nissan make one its VH45. There are to guys floating around with this engine that I know off. Kyle from melb and hazard from canberra. Kyles uses the 5spd gq box with custom bellhousing and clutch. Hazards got the output bits of the GQ auto and put them on the VH45 auto.
Also hazards is twin turbo'd.

In general, what does a custom bellhousing set you back? And who do you get to make one for you? Every time I contemplate an engine swap I find myself wondering about this and I have no idea what the answer is. I'd love to put a VH45 in the Maverick and the bellhousing is pretty much the only bit I wouldn't be confident to tackle myself.

Castlemaine rodshop makes custom bellhousings and im sure that marks etc could make a custom one for you, it would prolly cost you a bit of cash though esp if you need them to do the desgin work etc for you aswell

Kyle got AUS4wd (Sandy Bowman) to do his converstion, so not sure on. Give AUS4WD a call. As for where to find the engine, Google or yahoo search and just put VH45 (Infinity) in it and check out some of the links. Most of the jap importers should be able to get you a half cut (which usually includes wiring loom, and gearbox - auto only).

http://www.japparts.com.au/products/stock-arriving.html ($3000)

http://www.adelaidejap.com.au/front%20cuts.htm ($2800)

http://www.aus4wd.com.au/ (shop that will convert it for you)

VH45 - pretty expensive conversion according to Kyle himself.. AUS4wd is already doin conversions at the cost of 10K plus.. due to the amount of fabricating involved.

Its no straightfoward project as some people are led to believe.

What about the simple old VS or similar v8 from a commo? I have heard that they go really well even with the nissan 5 speed. I personally would love an auto but this may bump price up considerably.
You can pick em up reasonably cheep then maybe put a tow cam in them and bolt her in?

Marks have all the gear cause it has been done heaps. I think about 2500 for all the gear to bolt it up to a five speed. Plus motor of say 4000 tops
And realistically you should have a v8 injected motor in ya 4b.

I hope anyway!

if you go the VH45 option, an auto will bump DOWN the price considerably. custom fabrtication will them be limited to one engine mount and exhaust manifolds (stockers foul on the chassis rails)
