Hey Guys, im new to the sire, been looking around at it for awhile.
Now I have a question for you.
I had a go at doing my diff and gearbox oils tonight. Now I think I made a mistake.... I think I removed the wrong plug to fill the gearbox oil up with. It is on the passenger side, 19mm with an alluminium washer on it bent around it. I read somewhere after wards that it was the wrong thing to remove and that it holds something into place?? Is this correct and have I done some damage to the box?? Can it be easily fixed?? and where would I find the correct filler plug.
Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance.
Cheers

Oh no.
That's the first mistake some Rocky owners make
I think you need to open the box to fish out what has fallen in off the end of that bolt mate. 5th gear selector or something? Dont quote me.
Filler plug is on Drivers side with NO safety washer on it, same as transfer case.
Search and read through on here how others have fixed it.

Thanks for the info Hotfour. Hopefully it didn't do any damage. Am taking the box out tonight and cracking it open to see what was done to it. Hopfully not to hard.

Mate I did exactly the same thing when I changed my fluid the first time...
To get at it I had to take the whole box out, then take the access panel off the top of the box and shon a torch into it and I could see the selector. Then I got a piece of coathanger wire and pulled the selector up to the side, reached in and grabbed it out then re-attached it to the bolt that you just took out.
I'd be avoiding driving the car until you get it sorted as it's floating around in the bottom there.
Easy as... once you've got the box out though.

Cheers bugger,
Yeah I only reversed it twice, that was it, heard a nasty rattle and stopped. The box is now coming out on tuesday, hopefully it wont be to bad. If worse comes to worse, what would a decent price be for a 2nd hand gearbox for a petrol rocky???

Just for your info, if its a petrol, then its an F80, not 70.

I know... hours.
Then you pop the top off, fish the selector out, pop the bolt back in and the top back on then hours putting it all back in again
But you can be sure you won't make that mistake again!

Shouldnt need it no though...
When I had my box out I also replaced the little rubbery seat things the gear shifter's sat in. You know the round part that sits in at the top of the box, anywho. On mine they were fairly corroded so I just replaced em.
Dunno if your box is back in already or what... But I thought i'd mention it.

Thats why they have the aluminium locking tab on them. Have you ever seen a drain or fill bung on another vehicle with one? Nope.

Yeah yeah...
At the time I didn't take alot of notice. Undid it, filled it up, popped it back in, drove off with no 5th.
Made sense to me after!
