Its a 5 speed behind a 84 patrol MK SD33T ( Turbo Diesel) She has developed a whine esp in 2nd and 3rd. It on the input shaft as its whines with engine revs
Now if i acell hard or stab the throttle itll give out a loud bang.
I have a spare here but am trying to find time. I run 1/2 easy town and 1/2 motorway to and from work. abot 600+ km a week
SO with babying, how long ya reckon shell last? Hope a couple weeks?
Place your bets if not tech help
Cheers

Yeah murphys law, But pongo's law says itll blow on the way home in peak hour. Hopefully when its cold it will stay together.
Or the day before it rains for a week, as ill have to ride the bike. Might take the engel out in case.
Its done 440k so its held up pretty good.
Edit, Just went up to the servo and when it crunches it compares to riding a motor bike with a slipping chain and sprocket. loses power and can hear, feel the gears slipping and trying to mesh up again
So, does that mean input shaft bearings gone ? .

Sounds more like the input shaft teeth have gone!
I would be removing all but essential equipment from it as it'll probably be on its lonesome on the side of the highway for a while.

When "Murphies Law" kicks in..........
the new box should last a week after the change over
& you'll drop the old box back in as an emergency and it will last till the day she's sold

Pongo, check the backlash in the diff, when your pinion bearings go it loads up the crownwheel and pinion & when to lets go it can make a bang. Can be mistaken for gearbox, My old MK was noisy in 1,2,3 & 5 but as long a I kept the oil up to it (it leaked as well) it lasted the whole 4 years I had it.
If there is any more than about 1/4 inch of play in the tailshaft then it will load the crownwheel.

Nope, Shes dead.
Driving to work this morning she just dropped all drive. no bang, etc. Nothing exciting at all. 2 sets of lights before she got a nice vibration in the box, should of went home then , lol.
Still managed to find 4th gear only. can select the other gears but just no drive at all. So i drove home in 4 low, parked her and fired up the postie bike.
will have to give it an autopsy

With youre luck you will propably find that if you looked into it when it started whining, you would only be up for something like a bearing, but now you left it till it blew, it would have worn thru the housing and stripped some teeth or something as bad. So many trucks i repair could have saved thousands if they brought it in when it started making noise.

It has probably broken the lay shaft then I would say, 4th is straight though the cluster shaft on a 1:1 ratio.

I agree - either a broken layshaft or layshaft input gear. Can't really be anything else.
The only issue with driving it is if the broken part moves and damages something else or locks up the box while driving. I am not familiar with your box, so couldn't comment on your chances.
