I think you should buy one camo - then you can tell us how good they are
Alternatively, you could buy one, and then give it to me, and i'll tell you how good they are
Either way - clearly you should buy one.

Greg could only tell you what they are like on the road ... everyone else he knows would have to tell you what they are like once shifted into low range
(It seems 90% of the time another member of the Zuk club is driving Gregs vehicle once it gets into the dirt) ..

I thought it was Stevie Gs car and greg just transported it to the 4wheeling areas for him

as to the 8:1s you will definetly need some extra beef in the mounting of the t/case as it will try and rip the mounts off. Also I believe they need some fairly heavy grinding to get them to fit in the case. Also I'd imagine that due to the gear sizes they would be prone to breakage more than others although granted you wouldn't be thrashing them as much

side note my dancing man always makes me laugh when there are multiple ones in a row like above

Allot of people said the 6:1's would bust easy as well .. Only time will tell I guess .. Hav you seen the "billet" transfer case housings for the Zuks on the pirate board .. I would imagine that with the 8:1 gears a transfer case bucket or clam shell osrt od arangement may be nessecary to help brace the case and take some of the torque load ..
man twice as low (almost) as the 4.16 gears ... thats freakin low ..

4.16's are oh so old school yug...
How much are these 8:1's worth?

just got any email back from rocky road.
They are billet cut gears. The case does need to be shaved in a couple spots to install. Only about 1/8" in two places need to be removed. Doesn't weaken the case any.
Glenn Wakefield
www.rocky-road.com
price is 1,244.70 AUD to my door, for the basic kit (no bearing or seals included)

Thats why I love the 4.16's .. keepen it real .. dont need this fancy schmancy "bling bling" to have fun ... Not sure if the 8to 1's are avalibale in Aus at this point .. the 8:1's on the rocky road web site are 890 use .. so i guess anyware round the 2000 mark in Aus ..

For that price Camo go for it! I've read that the hi range reduction is the same as 6:1s which is a good thing.

Thats pretty bloody good pricing about the same as a 6:1/S3 gear set ... (hmm brain ticking over now) I could go stratit from old skool to new school ..
That with 4.6 geared diffs would be pretty cool for spinning some 37's ... hmmm

That doesn't sounds un-reasonable at all...
I was just thinking that if it was going to be something super costly like the thorax or klune V or something, that it may infact be competitive to get a Jimny Motor + Jimny Auto + S1 Hopper and get the same gearing (4:1 plus torque converter) plus the advantages of a slightly more powerful engine and fuel injection
Get the 8:1 and let us know how it goes Camo

Ah yes - it almost looks as though it would be held in place doesn't it

Just did some quick maths on the subject...
An 8:1 x-fer with stock diff gears (3.7:1) will be 29.62 (not inc 1st gear).
A 6.1:1 x-fer with 5.12 diff gears (5.12:1) will be 31.23 (not inc 1st gear).
Therefore, the 8:1 isn't geting to achieve anything more than what some of us are running already... though obviously it does open up further possibilities.

This is true, but you maintain the same revs on the Hiway, so you can run a bigger lower revving motor and still maintaina kick ass low range .. like if you wanted to install some MQ diffs .. and some bigger meats .. perhaps for the sake of arguement 37's ..

I didn't think of that - good point - if you are upgrading the engine, then it would be good.
Pete - perhaps this would fix your super revvy vitara engine situation

Except the fact it still uses the same rubber mounts

I'm pretty sure that dude uses poly bushes and bolts all the way thru instead of the stock mounts.
I'm thinking that would be necessary with 8:1

He does .. they must be pretty tough as well cos he managed to rip the mounts out of the chassis

Why I wouldnt do it .. is I reckon that your gearing can be to low .. say about 4.6's to 4.8's even with big rubber would be perfect cross between an aout and out crawler and a bit of a hill climb/mudder with up to 37's perhaps lower again for bigger rubber ..
No reason you couldnt .. thats just my opinion .. and your all welcome to it

Camo - my thoughts are similar to Yug's - if you go too low - the car will not be usable in some conditions (this is an issue in vic where we need wheel speed sometimes to get through mud and climb slick inclines etc)...
The other option is to have a very revvy engine (as per mine) which will allow you to run low gears, but still generate heaps of wheel speed.
Assuming the 8:1 has the same 2-High gearing as the 6:1, then if you have 5.12's and the 34x10.5 LTBs you were thinking about then you can expect to be doing about 4,000 rpms on the freeway in 5th to be travelling at about 100kms ph... But obviously you will be driving very slowly when in 4Low
As per my comments above - Go and buy one and let us know how it goes

Fill us in on this transfer case housing Yug...
This whole 8:1 case idea does raise a few thoughts though... i.e. why not replace the whole case rather than trying to make gears that will squeeze inside it..
Think about it - make the case another few inches longer and suddenly you could fit another gear set in there right? All you would need is Sierra front end (Jackshaft input and Front Drive shaft output) and sierra back end (Rear Drive Shaft Output) and then you could stretch out the middle to whatever length you want
Probably be just as expensive as something like the thorax i guess - but you would be able to use more room for it.
