This link is so old, it arrived to me by pigeon :D

Before transfer gears were available/affordable, all of these sort of ideas looked feasible. 4 speeds behind autos, stacked manuals, niva transfer cases, planetary equipped jackshafts....

The only real benefit I can see of this kind of setup is to retain stock high range for people who want gears offroad but run a 4 speed manual/3 speed auto, and/or small tyres and still want to cruise.

Like any of these sort of mods though, EVERYTHING ends up custom and that's a massive PITA when you want to do any other work on the car.

I remember hearing about the volvo gearbox thing around that time though (400BC :D) and it was interesting.

I think it was pioneered by the swedish who A) love suzuki's and B) have lots of old volvos to play with.

Steve.

PS If you calculated all those gears out you'd get LOTS of overlaps - i.e lots of options would be so close in ratio you'd never use them.

X2. It would be just like a 18sp mountain bike you would only use your fav 6 or so gears.

Still it would be good for confusing truck drivers off the lights.

Brrrrm, Brrrrm, Brrrrm, Brrrm, Brrrm, Brrrm, Brrrm etc.

yeah it's old........but at least for me very useable range and very inexpensive.....(gears here are extremely expensive)

oooh...and i've got about 48 gears....

right now running entirely stock drivetrain with 265/75 16 m/t.......with no problems........but want to change r/p to 4,56 for gas milage and better top speed.....

it is a partial daily driver and do sometimes go on long trips so i would like to get better gas milage and higher top speed......right now top speed is about 90 kilometers..........
