:?: Hi all, I wanted to get some opinions on the Silverstone MT117 Sports. I have a mate in the tyre game who said that he can get me a new set real cheap. Are they any good? What are they like on road? I have heard some pretty good reports about their offroad ability. What do they wear like? Are they noisy on road? I drive an NG Paj (last of the old shape) intercooled turbo 4D56. I currently run 31" Cooper STT's, with 2 front tyres in need of replacing at just 50,000km. I know that Coopers have a good reputation in Australia, but I am curious to try something new. In the past I have had some Cooper ST's on my old NA paj, and my girlfriend has 235/75r15 MTR's on her Holden Drover, which I am very impressed with. Any good or bad opinions and advice would be much apprieciated! Thank you, Sam.

P.S- Next month I will be driving to Birdsville via the Vic/SA Border Track, the Flinders & Gammon Ranges and Lake Eyre, and home to Melbourne again via Innamincka, Corner Country and Mungo National Park, so this will be the first test for my new tyres! :?

if the price is right, get them!
They are fairly tough. Wear is about a 7 out of 10 (in offroad tyre speek)
They are not that noisy (but not quiet)

If you are after cheaper tyres, ask about Maxxis Buckshot Muddies, or Nangkang Mudstars.

Had a set on my 87 Rangie Hi-Line, were great off-road and many instaces I didn't use my lockers on stuff that I nornmally would with MT's. Noisy on-road to be expected of the directional pattern although the Rangie had no carpet or insulation so that didn't help.

Only thing I didn't like is they were a bit wide for me, I prefer tall and narrow. Would fit again though but picked up some Simex ET's for the next Rangie that are narrower.

OK! I measure all my tread depths today so I had an idea of how my tyres are going. NG Paj- Cooper STT's (50k) rear 7mm tread, front approx 2mm. I compared them with my Holden Drover MTR's (70k)- brand new spare 14mm tread, rear 9mm, front 7mm.

here are my options which i'd apprieciate some help with:
1) Keep the rear STT's and buy new fronts- $560
2)Go back to ST's- $1000 for 4
3) 31" MTR's- $230 each
4) 32" MTR's- $265 each, 5 for $1325
5) 31" MT117 Sports- 5 for $1000

They are my options. I really like Coopers but dont have much money lying around to go back to ST's, but with my MTR's as the tread depth proves, I cant fault them. I'd love to go to 32" but that is a bit too pricey for me. I have read mostly good reviews about the MT117 Sport and Extreme tyres, but also read a few bad ones. Alot of the bad reviews were related to more 'hardcore' offroading, which isn't really my style though. I wouldn't mind trying something new, even if i only use them for 1 set.

Had a set of the 31's for the past couple of years. Lots of off road, no more noticeable road noise than the worn MTR's I took off. Rate them highly as a a good aggressive alrounder.

Hey Waxy.. ;) Where you been dude?

Now back to the subject at hand.

I Run the Silverstone M/T Xtreme's in a 31x10.5R15 as reviewd in the above post on my Vitara. I rearly drive them on the black stuff & havent even bothered to get them balanced. I wouldnt even bother trying them on sand unless you want to digg to China.. These tyres are simply ultimate for rock crawling & mud, chunkyer than the Simex's too. The M/T Sports are allmost as good off road but definatly be better for on road and dirt road, Sand mmm dunno. If your looking at going west into that desert sand, I be looking more towards a A/T or mild M/T like a Maxxis Buckshot or similar. I run the Buckshots for on road & sand and they are great. Nice and cheap too. 30x9.5R15 were $175ea

Just my thoughts.

Yeah I have experienced that a little bit with this website and especially 4WD action. Is it because I dont have a Landcruiser/ Patrol 6" lifted, twin locked, with 38" Claws and a supercharged chev V8 fitted with rock hoppers or something?

Maybe I will one day ask a real hardcore question about something (that i wont give a rat's arse about) and see how many replies i can get.

90% of the time people hang shit on here it is because either a stupid question has been asked 15 times aleady for the year and a 3 minute search could of prevented it, or like the banner above being paid out on and then people taking offence to it and jumping on their high horse which usually = open slather :finger:
