Fitting 3.9/4.0 torque converter to TD5

I'm in the process of having a ZF4HP22EH rebuilt with ZF4HP24 internals to handle a chipped/intercooled TD5.

A comment from Ashcroft's is that the TD5 torque converter is barely satisfactory for the standard TD5, and fitting the bigger 3.9/4.0 V8 torque converter is a better option to handle the power.

AMV in Melbourne are doing the conversion but are saying the torque converter for the TD5 is a 3 bolt pattern and the V8 is a 4 bolt pattern to the flywheel....

Any ideas about how this may be done????? Any help would be hugely appreciated before it gets done.

Hi Slunnie,

I had a torque convertor custom made by Autoflite in Thomastown (Melb) to go between a 350 and C9. (i.e. Chev flex plate pattern one side, Ford splined on the other)

Had to be heavy duty and an odd length to take account of an adaptor plate.

Very happy with the end result. Length was accurate to within about 1mm. Cost about $480. Choose your own stall speed.

Sorry I don't have their phone number. You need to talk to Jason.

cheers, DL

When they are modding the converter, just give them the flex plate and they can put new feet on them, i had this done when i got my t700 converter done, they turned it from a 3 bolt to a 6 bolt. easy.

Hi,

I don't know how ZF's are configured but I do know that the converter for mine had to be an exact length for the distance between flex plate & C9 or the pump would either not drive or get mashed.

cheers, DL

On the money. It seems to do this mod that the V8 torque converter needs to be modified to have the same mounts as the TD5.
