how you going fellas, just wondering who runs 35s on there zook. im curruntly on 35inch MTRs, but looking to go down to 33s, what do you guys recon?
the reason im doing this is my gearing isn't suited for it (well in low range anyways) the engine pulls it fine but when i wana crawl i need to put it into 1st. i could do the gearing, but looking for a cheap alternative.

as i might need to rebuild the engine
has anyone here ever stepped down in tire size and notice a differnce when wheelin,
one more thing, if you have 35's on your zooks. can you please post some pics up

also same for 33inch owners, just to compare
thanks

So you spent the money on upgrading suspension and everything else needed to run 35s but didnt do the gears and are now wondering what it will be like on 33s? Did you graduate from Clown college or did they ask you to leave?
Here's the answer. Until you pony up the dough for gears, any tyres over 31s are basically going to be shit. Buy gears and dont look back.
Ps Have a read of the bible. All sorts of info you never knew is in there.
Btw, out of curiosity, what suspension are you running and do you break much stuff?

I currently have 1600 with 6.5 t/c 4.88 toys on 33s but am going 35s VERY soon. If I had stock axles I would stay 33s but as Ihave toys with huge centres Im going 35s.
Atm my gearing sucks on road way slow, great in high range on windy up &b down fire trails but low is a little low for most 4wding but on rock I still ride the clutch.

On 33s but with plenty of room for 35s

4.88 brings the gearing back to stock on 33s so it should get along fine on road with 1600 and 35s.
What are your plans for the rig mud, sand, rock, etc this will help to decide reduction gears needed.
Ps dont be so guick to bite at the stirring that goes on there issome top fisherman on here that get great bites out of unwarry newbies

5.29's in your diffs would help you in both high and low range.
With only a zook on top of them and a 1.6 Vit pushing them along they should be strong enough.

for the cost of 4x 33's you could buy a set of good gears anyway =)

by Dee
SPUA, TG 6.5:1 T/case, std 3.7 R&P.
Goes great 1st to 4th. Top end in 5th suffers a bit, if i get a head wind or a hill its back to 4th. Could probably go some 3.9's in the diffs, but it doesnt worry me enough to bother.. Its got a fresh engine & extractors exhaust so it goes better than my mates on 31's still..

listen up champ, i asked a simple question. i didnt ask for anyone to start jabbering on....
I didnt mean to jabber, I was just pointing out that you needed gears and that your overall ratio would be terrible on 33s/35s without them. Im sorry I didnt go back through all of your previous posts in order to better analyse what you were saying. This was remiss of me. Next time I will conduct a thorough investigation of you and everything you have done in order to better understand where you are coming from. I would hate for you to have to be more specific in your questions.
my car is FAR FROM STANDARD, EVERYTHING IS STRONG AS HELL, I GOT THE CAR AS IS
Um, congratulations. I did kinda guess that when you mentioned it had 35s. I hear its hard to fit them stock.
now i didnt say the zook didnt move move, it has NO trouble whats so ever. it moves pirty easy and quck actually, i just wanted to be able to crawl.... SLOWER than i do now..
I believe you. Your zook can move move. I dont remember actually saying that it couldnt move?
SPOA
97 hilux fron and rear diffs
2 inch suspension lift
2 inch body lift
high steering conversion
vitara 5 speed gear box and drive shafts
Ah! Actual useful information!
Have you thought about removing some of your lift? It sounds hella high. Whats your WB at?
Oh and this info would have been handy in your original post. Also, why not tell us that you are running 4.88s?
97 front and rear diffs eh? I thought they went IFS late 96. Could be wrong there though.
As I said in my original reply, you need tcase gears. With the aussie dollar so strong atm they are really not too expensive. Best of luck.
If you have a problem with how I responded to your somewhat vague question feel free to take it up with me via PM.

Yer it seems a bit late, yes there was a few 97 models with SAF, not many though. Anyway post up some pictures so we can see the rig....? And are you running a Vitara transfer case or a Sierra one.....
Out of Interest, what high steer kit is on the Zook, and are you running power steering maybe this would help sway the choice?

I don't post on here just for the fun of it but my wanker alert is going off. Have you even got a car or licence? If you want to go slower eg crawl you change your crawl ratio. eg gears or diff ratios.
Posted: Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:48 pm
by Dozoor
Ok , the easest way to get back the gearing for the road and the crawling would be to --- Remove the vit transfer , to do this you will need
a modified extension housing that will accept a rear seal , and then run a sierra transfer , even the series 1 transfer gears (4-1) will at least make it drivable on and of road , seirra transfers have a reduction in high range of 1.58 -1 with the s 1 gears this effectivly lowers the on road gearing - the series 4 gears are even better for 35s .
Ive seen pic of your car it looks great . But im afraid if you really would like to go crawling with those 35s and the what looks to be a standard wheelbase you really need to lose some height and open those gaurdes up to allow decent travel without rubbing .
Just my thoughts ,
Larry.

How come Larrys seen pics and we havnt?
If you wanted to keep the vit case you could get gears for it as they wouldnt change high range and get some hiace?? 5.29 diff gears, or just add the zuk t/c to the back off the vit case.
All comes down to what are your plans for this rig?

By the sound of it you bought someones already modded rig?
Dont be offended but thats tall! You could easily lose the b/l and still fit 35s, get creative and you could lose the lift springs to (Im one to talk

)
To novice yes that looks cool but to those that know, it would work better with a lower centre of gravity.
This is just friendly advise not a personel attack, look at my pic I need to do this myself but need to remake front spring set up as I need 2" rears to level out with the flat front springs.
Newbies normaly buld UP looks like you need to build DOWN

Just posted in the auto vs manuel thread I tried and failed
No over drive plus sucked air on angles. If it had overdrive and was from a 4wd (so it ran on angles) I would give it a go. In rocks Istill ride the clutch but its a little low for normal stuff.
