i have 96 swb vit with a starter motor issue(3 in 12 months)
before i put the last 1 in i coverd the whole thing in silicon,was this a good idea or can some one tell me if there r other options?

hi all

maybe provide alot more info.
What are the issues? What sort of driving are you doing, I'm guessing mud and water? Are the starters new or 2nd hand? Don't reckon covering it in silicon is a good idea as it would keep heat in and any mud and water that gets in will struggle to get out.

I have never heard of someone covering their starter in silicon before so I can't say for sure but I doubt it was a good idea.
Silicon has a VERY high melting point which makes it an excellent heat insulator.
You may have overheated and burnt/melted your starters' internals.
If you have been through 3 starters in 12 months I'd say you have a problem somewhere which is causing this.
Did they all go the same way or did some meltdown while others stripped teeth or solenoids?
Could be a flywheel problem or maybe 'operator error'. Starters are only designed for short bursts of work as they have no cooling fan or vents.
If you crank it for extended periods then that could be the problem.

more info ok.... as for where im driving.evrywhere,mud(not so much the last month or so though,not much rain),more than a few creek crossings(so yeh bit if water),beach and trail.
new or used.... first 2 where new,last time local auto elect cleaned it and replaced the solenoid(he said it was a bit messy but thought the problem was the solenoid)
its cost me $650 so far and all i have ended up with is nearly reco starter motor
ps. its not the driver. and i only put the silicon on this time when i put it back in the other day.
