Is 3ltr TD GU patrol series 3 a common rail, or does it have a Bosch VP44 injector pump.

Common rail became available in 2007 on the series 6. Yours is direct injection.

NO. I bought a DP 34 Chip out of the trading post, of a Landcruiser 100 series. Trying to organise to get it fitted as the DP34 also fits my GU 3ltr TD, acording to DP Chip internet sight. Their stats show the chip for a 3ltr GU common rail is a DP31. So just making sure I have done the right thig purchasing the chip and brought the right one.

going by the site DP34 is the one you want.
The DP34 system is designed to work with High Speed Solenoid controlled injection pumps. For example: the Bosch VP44 injection pump installed on the Nissan Patrol 3 litre
I hope you have done some precautions to ensure motor actual survives.
ie fit EGT gauge is a must.

Hey Tweak'e does that go for the navara's as well?
Have put the Dtronic back in but I take it pretty easy on the right foot.

going by the site its the same unit for the ZD30 navara's.
with ANY diesel its a wise idea to fit EGT guage before playing with fuel.

Zexel have the license from Bosch to make them for Nissan.
*offtopic*
Some say they're a dodgey pump, but sensitivity to fuel pressure and quality is part of their design.
Might be of interest to some people:

There was a problem with earlier series VP44 on trucks where the brass bush in the housing would cause dramas and fail, but the problems were almost fixed overnight when bosch introduced a steel bush. Fuel quality is crucial as well as any dirt or water will chew the pumps out (read use quality high micron rating fuel filters).

Whats the difference between the commen rail and the direct injection.
ie, power, torque ?

the common rail vers gets a different head and inlet manifold.
basicly it boils down to a different way of doing emmions control.
afaik the CRD gets more torque lower down but looses out on the top end. poeple have mentioned its quicker off the line but overall not as fast.
