KZTE Pump timing

Hi all, i've been reading through all the posts, signed up, and this is my first post. Thanx for the interesting forum.I would like to know how to make sure my KZ's injector pump timing is spot on. I had the head replaced, and since then There is mare black smoke than before. I had the injectors tested, all fine. I also found that the engin oil was 12mm over the full mark on the dipstick.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I don't think we have many South Africans.
I can't directly answer your question, however if you have a manual for your engine it should have timing specifications, for VE pumps the timing is usually specified as an amount of plunger lift (say 1.06mm) at a particular position (eg TDC). there should be a plug on the back of the pump into which you can screw a timing tool adaptor which you fix on to a dial gauge; it's a bit messy and impossible without the right tools.
If there is some black smoke and you are sure it is timing related (ie you are sure there is no air inlet restriction, no fuel restriction, not overfuelling), then the timing is probably slightly retarded and you can advance it in very small increments to try to improve it. good luck.

check the egr system.
if its stuck open, which is fairly common, or vac hoses are incorrect you will get an increase in smoke. the increase in exhaust temps can mean the new head won't last long.
also check the cam belt isn't a tooth out. that seems to be a common mistake.

Sorry Tweak'e, I am not verry familiar with diesel engins and terms, what does egr stand for. Also, the egt has not gone over 550ºC.

Unfortunately the 1kzte pump doesnt allow for fitting a plunger lift guage. It is stricly line up the line on the side of the pump housing to the line on the timing cover.
Black smoke is too much fuel or not enough air. There are a lot of things that can cause it as well as combinations of items. Best to get it to someone who knows these diesels to sort it out.

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation.
basically it pours exhaust back into inlet manifold for emissions purposes.
not sure if your one will have it as some countries don't.
look for a pipe that goes from the back of exhaust manifold around the head back into the inlet manifold.
also when is it smoking ? all the time, high rpm or just any time its full throttle ?

The smoking only occurs when gearing down and put foot, or when revving.
Theres no pipes from exhaust to intake.

so only when the engine is under load? this is normal for a diesel. ever watched a big truck take off from the lights? a heap of smoke as it slowly gaining momentom, but then no smoke once cruising

It used to smoke a lot less before the head replacement, but as I mentioned, the person who did the job overfilled the engin oil by 12mm. I corrected it and its possable that with time it will get less. It is already less than after I removed some oil. I think this should close this chapter. Thanx for all involved.

like @#$% it is !
smoke means something is wrong. you can get your vehicle pulled off the road here for that. its been a looong time since i've seen a smoky truck. even the old 2 stroke diesel never used smoke.
about time you old boys stopped this wifes tale nonsense.
