Welsh Plugs

Post by HotFourOk »

Hey peoples,

I have coolant dripping from the bottom of my bellhousing.
Does that indicate that a welsh plug has gone behind the flywheel?

If so, can you drop the gbox off the motor and access it easily?

Also, how many plugs do they have?

Cheers, Nick. (1993, F78, 2.8TD)

Are you sure its coming out of the bell housing and not running down from higher up near the head?

If it is coming from the bell housing area you will need to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel. Then you should be able to remove the backing plate to get at the crank seal and any welch plugs behind there. I was in this area of my vehicle only a few months back but I cant remeber seeing any welch plugs under the cover, besides the one for the cam shaft. There could be more, just cant remeber thats all.

I have a very slight leak in this area on mine except its actually coming from the head gasket at the back of the head. A couple of the coolant holes in the gasket come very close to the edge. It's more of a weep rather than a leak really.

There is a large welsh plug in the back of the head tho'.

Good luck.

Cheers ;)
If it doesn't have two sticks, I don't wana know about it!

When I checked I couldn't see any signs of it running down from the top of the block, but I'll have to look at it a bit more.

Would be a lot easier if it is just the large one on the back!

Thanks for the help mate.

I had a look through the book and I can't tell if there is any behind the flywheel.
I've got a picture of the back of my motor and it clearly shows 2 large welsh plugs at the rear, both located above the gearbox. I presume they are both welsh plugs. I can send you a pic if that's any help.
