Air filter question

hey guys!!
i was just wondering how to clean out my air filter?
my mate told me to just hose is down!
is this right as i dnt want to fuk it up!
its a carby air filter

for your sake dont hose it out, its not a K&N filter right? if its just a replaceable filter blow it out with some air and give it a wack ( to dislodge anything ) then blow it again, putting the hose on it will just wreck it if its a replaceable filter, a K&N filter though will need the special shampoo to clean it
