Are there any differences (strength/reliability) wise between the 4.2 petrol and 4.2 diesel 5 speed gearboxes?????
I think I read that the bell housing is slightly different but are there any other differences.
I want to put a 5 ltr commo motor infront of one and if there is a stronger option I will go with it.
Cheers
Brian

they are the same box petrol or diesel. the pre 92 models did have a slightly lower first, but less synchros, but not enough difference to really get picky with.

Cool thanks very much for that.
Are heavy duty clutches available for these boxes?
I hope to purchase a new patrol in the next 2 weeks and I am a nissan virgin!!!!
Never really been into the toyota nissan thing but I do appreciate a tuff truck when I see one!!!

use a "safari tuff" clutch as they are used by heaps of ppl with aftermarket turbos and seem the go.
early gq gearboxes had a 4.556 first gear and later ones had 4.262.
gu non turbo ute also had 4.556 first gear .
GQ gearboxes [ FS5R50A ]appear to be stronger than the GU [FS5R50B]
gu 4.8 has a 4.085 first
