I have no idea what a sump gasket is! Apparently it needs changing - what does this involve? Will it be expensive?

Its what seals your sump (the oil reservoir at the bottom of your engine) to your engine block. The gasket itself should be $10-20 ($12 from Suziwest) and it shouldn't take your mechanic long to change it (probably minimum charge of 1 hr labour). Get the oil changed at the same time.

last time i looked at all the vitara motors i've come across they don't run a gasket on the sump...just silicone from the factory....and i've allways put them together the same way.

Yup. They are siliconed on... and, without lifting the motor a bit, its a tight squeeze, so, you end up accidentally bumping it a lot on the way back on, and thereby smearing your carefully laid out silicon all over the place (and at the same time making it such that you have to then take the sump back out and re-do the bed of silicon).

Can I suggest you either hire an engine hoist and/or look up some sweet new swear words before you attempt it, because you'll need them.

last time i did one in a vit i removed the front diff....plenty of room then, and no mess.

When I changed mine I ordered a gasket from auto pro $7 I think and it was the same as seirra.
When I got it apart it was sealed with silicone so I cleaned it up and used the gasket. Maybe if I,d used silicone it wouldnt still be leaking
