unreliable....famous for breaking stuff....had one.......

they would be good if you could swap the sierra suspension under one.



As time goes on they will become more affordable and when that happends more will get modded and they will get better.

jimny had a good ride,was nice inside and for a stocker was alot more capable offroad than a stock sierra. its down fall was a shitty gearbox....design flaw with the rear ring and pinion, g13bb motor was unreliable, and wasn't easy to gear.

Hi Joe its a Reef, with my 5 inch lift Jimny. So far i Haven't Broken anything even going to the toughest tracks, I've been bogged a couple of times. jumped a bit, i think the 2006 jimny is much beefier at everything. Even the ring and pinions are a little bit bigger and stronger than the old one.
But I would like to beef it up more for Bigger tires in the future.

For info it is a 2006 Jimny with vvti and automatic, 4.1 diff, 2.6 low gear.
and 31" tires for now, looken forward to 33"s.

if u are going to mod any of them, how deep are your pockets.

you can get a jimny looking and going nice with the right coin and bits.

You cannot say on is better or worse without specifying the exact criteria on which you're judging the vehicles. I'm suprised you haven't been flamed for such a vague question already, probably because people just CNF after the 20 other vague noob Q's this week.

Hi esp22, Ive noticed that you have started numerous threads across the board asking "is xxxxxx any good?", the best advice for you dude is to go out and drive the vehicles you are asking about and form your own ideas.

Asking if a particular car model is any good is not going to help you decide. If you are honestly going to spend thousnads of dollars on a car off the advice of anonymous forum members without testing that car out for yourself then sorry, but I hope you buy the most busted arse piece of shit jalopy ever. Not saying it to be mean but you honestly deserve it for being such a retard.

Now, before next saturday here's what you need to do:

1. Make a list of what 4x4's you're interested in buying

2. Buy the Trading post, autotrader, whatever.

3. Arrange to go and test drive one or two examples of the cars on your list in your area.

4. Spend Sauturday forming an opinion of your very own.



Trust me, half a day spent doing this will reap so many more rewards than the responses from the 35 identical threads you have started. It wont cost you anything but a few hours and some fuel.

My old Jimny Stimpy - ran 32s, 4" suspension lift, 3" body lift and a rockhopper 3 in a Sierra transfer case... never broke anything apart from a fingernail.

Careful wheel placement and not throwing your Suzuki at and obstacle tends to help...

Na jimnys are the best and are unbreakable
mines got a 2'' spring 2'' body 31'' muddys (bit of chopping)
roll cage crawler gears. its a mighty machine its even been in procomp.

I've been hovering around reading alot of what you members have been saying for the last week.
I'd like to say thanx to everyone with applause or criticism , it has opened my eyes up at looking at used a Jimny.

I test drove a couple a few weeks ago and a stock rode so rough(don't forget i'm a noob) where I drove one with a 2 inch suspension lift and she drove like a dream.

I only need one for the Beach and also driving to work so I think one of these would be great. (for me) (and the missus) haha.

what years were the series 1 jimnys made?

what are they like on fuel on long trips. say from brisbane to sydeny

ummmm.....actually....series 2 are the better....as far as engine goes....

So another myth to add to the sydney/melbourne thing:

Jimny's don't break in sydney

A reef - I think the reason you're not breaking is youre auto and the hits are softened.

Squik - I don't think you'll be able to break a jimny with 215's on it.

Everyone - I don't actually think they're significantly weaker than a sierra, but they do work differently, and that highlights the weaknesses of what is effectively a stock sierra drivetrain.

They have lots more wheelbase than a sierra, and no weight behind the rear wheels - this makes them build more traction and keeps the (weak) front end loaded up.

They're heavier than a sierra.

They have more power and torque, and will run cleanly on angles and when jolted, so they keep putting power down when a stock sierra will be stalled out

The coil suspension stops them hopping which releases load on the driveline in a leaf car

There are NO strength upgrade parts and replacement parts like CV's are hard to get.

Less of them are running properly geared so the drviers have to hit things harder, leading to more breakage.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a jimny to take offroad, to me the guards are too small (and too hard to open up beyond a narrow 32" tyre) and theres not enough HD stuff for them, but that might change with time.

Engine maybe, but the Series 1 - up till early 2000 - are tougher and don't have airbags...

Hard to open up? Geezus... I did mine with a hacksaw, set of multigrips and bigass hammer

215s? Nahhhhhh.... I ran Stimpy later on 32s... mind you, gearing helps a lot

Squik, I'm not stirring for the sake of it, but a jimny at the height you were running stimpy A) won't need the guards opened up the way I'm talking and b) won't be functional in Vic. If you're driving the hard lines here in Vic you just can't be that high, but you also can't run under a 31, and that's where it gets hard in a jimny. The firewall and rear inner guard just can't easily give up the room required.

Re DG tuning - 950 euros Changeover for a 22 spline inner axle set and a heatreated CV you wouldn't want to break that!

Sorry, ATM I just don't think it's feasible to try and build a jimny to run with a Sierra offroad. That's based ont he experience we've had here in Vic.

The fact the US market never got the Jimny will seriously limit the parts availability in the future too.

hai steve i own many sierra before .they are not strong as you think .that way a lot off sierra use vitara part or even worst use toyota part.or jeep . but now every body own one .that way build some thing different.yes jimny need lot to be modified with little bit imagination and $

Oh come on Steve... I've seen the new Jimny Sierra ads on TV. You can drive through puddles, go on dirt roads and get airbourne... an' everyfing!!

Heres where I will enter into this. Yes jimny axles and cv's are weak. Anyone who has locked the front end will know this. Yes h/d parts can be bought from overseas but do cost the earth. By the ways ppl we had a jimny in our club with 32's locked both ends a "2 inch lift" and of course gearing. Where the proof a series 1 is stronger. Remember car companies test and run kms after cars are made. Upgrades for the new series. Series 2 did had a lot of problems with C.A.S to this day I still live with the problem. Arief I'm still yet to in yours in action. Got a god pic from wadin thoe.Two black jimnys in a row rare. I believe a 31 is biggest tyre which can be fitted with out going over board and keeping it reliable.

Just to add my 4.5c :

Jimny's i have seen can look very beasty, can be quite capable (in the right hands), and I even have a mate who comes out 4x4ing with us regularly. But i have never driven one personally, and my mate wont let me touch his (too expensive to scratch, apparently).

My leafy sierra handles better (but has a few mods to help) but his is like the Taj Mahal inside when compared to my WT.

Plus his is way more comfortable on the road.

Seriously mate, depending on what you drive and how you drive will determine what type of car you should get. Period.

You will only get 1200 different opinions from this thread, and i dunno if they will be helpful.

If you are only occasionally going offroad, the Jimny is way more comfortable day-2-day.
Wanna drive up the side of a building? - buy a cheap-ass sierra, and spend the extra cash on modding the hell outta it (but dont expect it to be a smooth on-road car).
