Hi,
just wondering what people can tell me about the 3L V6 engine in mid-90s 4Runners? How reliable, fuel economy?
I have a 95 Camry with the 3L V6 which is a great motor but I believe it's not the same motor as the 4runner.

The 4runner V6 (3VZE) motors are pretty reliable....but do suffer a headgasket sometimes. Most were fixed under a factory recall. Removing the factory exhaust crossover pipe and installing some extractors pretty much fixes that but.
Fuel wise they are pretty thirsty. When I swapped in a lexus V8 to replace the V6 I got about the same fuel economy with about twice the power.
As far as I know the Camry V6 (3VZ-FE) is basically the same motor besides the heads.

If you want performance you will have to keep the engine above 3K RPM.
That mans "corporate board member" income when it comes to fuel usage.
If you drive like an old woman concentrating on who is in your rear view mirror, don't expect good fuel economy either.

Mine was very reliable.
Expect about 14 L per 100km wether it be around town or on the hi way.
They are also a good offroad motor.
The biggest drawback is a lack of power below 2700rpm as V6hilux wrote.
They lose power and you wash a lot of speed off on the hiway when faced with long steady gradients.
Cheers
